Drawings on stones - step-by-step instructions for painting on stone for beginners

Preparatory part

To create an exceptional, special piece that will delight the eyes of those passing by in the garden, light pebbles with a dense and smooth texture are selected. Sea pebbles are like that. It is carefully washed with water, baking soda and soap and dried (preferably in a warm place, not with a towel).

For a light and smooth paint coating, it is advisable to apply a layer of solution mixed from PVA and water in equal quantities. For painting on stones, it is preferable to use paints that are most resistant to weather changes and do not wear off.

Acrylic corresponds to these properties, but you can use gouache, watercolor, or paint specializing in painting ceramic ware. In case of an erroneous smear, a solvent will come to the rescue.

Brushes and rollers will come in handy. Protect the work area with oilcloth and paper. Wear special clothing. When finished, coat the work with acrylic or clear manicure varnish. This will add shine and provide protection from environmental conditions.

Manufacturing of artificial stone

Sometimes the imagination of the authors creates images that do not quite correspond to the possibilities available to nature. You may not find a single cobblestone that would be suitable for the implementation of your idea. Then a great solution is to create stones with your own hands.

The process description looks like this:

  1. You need to fill a basin or bucket with a small amount of water.
  2. Next, pour regular sand until it reaches the same level as the water. The main thing is that the moisture is evenly absorbed into the surface of the sand. There shouldn't be anything left at the top.
  3. With their own hands they create a special depression inside the sand mass. It should be the same in shape as the intended cobblestone for future work.
  4. The prepared form is lined with polyethylene.
  5. Next they move on to mixing the cement mortar. It then needs to be poured into the mold.
  6. The top of the workpiece is covered with polyethylene material. The entire structure is sprinkled with a thick layer of sand on top.
  7. After drying, cement stones can be painted using standard technologies. Drawing is easier than it seems.

You can add pigment or tinting paste to the cement (when mixing it), then it will be easier to create a background with the required shade. Painting on stones at home is always an effective solution.

If you can’t find it, no problem

If you couldn’t find a suitable stone for the expected design, you can make it yourself. Water and sand are mixed in a basin. Excess liquid is drained. Once all the moisture is completely absorbed, a hole is made in the sand, shaped with the necessary outlines.

A plastic film is spread over it and diluted cement mortar is poured with the addition of any coloring pigment. The top is covered with oilcloth and pressed with a sufficient layer of sand. All that remains is to wait for the cement to harden.

Painting stones with acrylic

Preparation of material and tools

Large or small pebbles, paints, brushes and varnish are the main elements for the artistic process.

Pebble selection criteria

The most suitable stones for decoration with paint are pebbles (sea). For this reason, a holiday at sea will help you find free and varied material for your business. If minerals are not available, look for suitable materials in your area. The main criteria for selecting stones on which paint will adhere well are:

  • Light-colored materials. A background that is too dark can distort the colors you choose for your drawing.
  • Density. Minerals with a porous structure strongly absorb paint, and this will increase the consumption of materials.
  • Shape without sharp corners. It is better to choose specimens of the correct shape without corners, otherwise it will be difficult to choose a suitable image.

Important: all conditions are fully met by pebbles with a flat base. This stone will be stable when placed on the surface as a decoration for a personal plot. The drawing will be neat and with clear outlines.

Types of paints

Drawings on stones with acrylic paints are very beautiful, but some people don’t want to immediately spend money on expensive acrylic, especially if we are talking about beginners.

The best paints for stones are:

  • Acrylic dyes.
  • Watercolor or gouache.
  • Means for painting dishes and ceramics.

The consistency of acrylic paints is dense and very similar to the consistency of cream. Thanks to this quality, there will be no smudges in the drawing, and there will be no need to re-paint certain areas. Even after the first application, the composition will lie evenly, densely (or, more simply, ideally).

Advantages

We want to show what advantages acrylic paints have:

  1. Color stability. The design on the stone will retain its initial brightness for a long time even under the influence of the sun's rays.
  2. The structure is plastic, which prevents the formation of cracks in the drawing after drying.
  3. No toxic emissions or pungent odor. Working with acrylic paints does not harm your health when creating drawings, even indoors.
  4. Excellent withstands temperature changes over a huge range.
  5. Moisture resistance. Such drawings will not be washed off the stone even after rain.

Please note that the quick-drying property of acrylic paint sometimes only creates problems for a novice artist. To prevent this from happening during the process, the dye should be applied to the palette in small doses.

Professional compositions have many advantages, especially if they are intended for painting ceramic products. But the limitation when purchasing such paints is the high price. Another obstacle for a novice artist is the need to fire the finished stone in the oven. Only if this and the above conditions are met will the pattern remain unchanged for a long time and cracks will not appear on it.

Gouache and watercolor, or rather their properties, are not entirely suitable for this type of work, especially when decorating stone that will be placed in the garden. The paints themselves have a liquid consistency. Due to cracking under the influence of sunlight and lack of resistance to moisture, the design will very quickly lose its original appearance.

Brushes

In order for the drawing on the stone with acrylic paints to be distinct, you need to choose your brushes very wisely. Typically, a set of brushes contains only eight items, which vary in the shape and length of the bristles, as well as in size.

Important! When applying acrylic paints, we recommend using synthetic or nylon brushes. Thanks to this, the composition will be distributed evenly and will not leave lint and hair in the drawing.

When applying a pattern or design using acrylic paints, do not allow the brush to dry out - a container of clean water will save you from this. When you need to change the color, the instrument will need to be rinsed and dried very thoroughly.

In addition to the above tools that will help with painting, you will need an auxiliary tool, namely:

  • Toothpicks for drawing fine details.
  • Pencil to draw a sketch.
  • Solvent and cotton swab if necessary to correct defects.
  • A primer that will replace PVA glue.
  • A transparent varnish that securely fixes the design on the damask with acrylic paint.

At the preparation stage, take care of your appearance - it is better to find some work clothes that will not hinder your movement.

Painting stones for the yard

An easy and cheap option for decorating a dacha or garden plot for beginners step by step:

  1. Choice of material.
  2. Drawing up a sketch.
  3. Choice of paint and brush.
  4. Transferring the sketch to the cobblestone.
  5. Fixing the image.

Drawings on stones with acrylic paints come in a wide variety. It is better to choose such a dye for a number of significant advantages. It does not fade in the sun, does not crack over time, is not toxic, does not stink, dries in a short time (about 15 minutes), is not dissolved by water (and therefore rain) and is not afraid of various temperatures (from the heat of the sun to the frost of winter) .

If there is a ceramic figure of a gnome or other fairy-tale hero in the yard, then a magic house will be useful for it. So he will have his own home. For the tower you need a large boulder with an elongated oval, slightly pointed shape. For effect, you can form a path leading from the threshold.

It’s not difficult to imagine how to draw a stone, the usual parameters for animal lovers. These are any representatives of the fauna: a cat curled up in the shape of a ball or a dog; snails with their shells on their backs; deer or foxes; any insects with or without wings.

Sometimes, it’s enough to schematically outline the tail and muzzles, complete the eyes and ears, and it will be clear. The main thing is to choose a place on the grass so that they don’t get lost there.

Painting flowers on stone will add brightness and richness to the flowerbed. Tulips, roses, peonies will create a feeling of blooming all year round. Wildflowers: dandelions, forget-me-nots, cornflowers will add romance to any yard.

Fantasies can be anything. Drawing water waves, splashing fish, croaking frogs and water lily leaves on the stones will create a reservoir or pond.

Another useful application is to determine terrain zones. You just need to place and evenly distribute them in the form of borders and paths.

Which stones to choose?

You cannot do without trips to the sea, because only there you can select the source material that has all the necessary characteristics. But some artistic techniques also look great on ordinary pebbles, which can be found on any beach.

The base itself for painting must meet the following requirements:

  • suitable size depending on the selected pattern;
  • flat form for fixing the stone on surfaces in a horizontal plane;
  • the presence of the correct geometry (choose perfectly round or oval stones);
  • absence of a porous structure (the base should be as smooth as possible, without pits or cracks);
  • the color should not be too dark (this is especially important if you plan to draw on stones with acrylic paints).

Light, smooth and dense stones are the most convenient basis for work. This surface makes it easier to distribute paint evenly. It is easier to create a neat and clear pattern. However, the use of porous minerals is acceptable in some cases. They have a surface that absorbs paint in large quantities. When using some artistic techniques, this is only a plus.

You shouldn’t limit yourself by trying to find and use only ideal options. Geometrically complex shapes can also become the basis for creating unusual drawings, for example, if you want to depict houses of various sizes.

1:1114 1:1123

But you can also take a closer look at ordinary stones lying in the garden, both small and quite large. Remember when we were kids and we all looked at the clouds and wondered what each of them looked like?

1:1461 1:1470 2:1974 2:8

Look more closely, perhaps the curves of one of the stones in the garden also remind you of some animal or object.

2:229 2:238 3:742 3:751 4:1255 4:1264

The most suitable paints are acrylic. They do not have a strong odor, dry quickly, and adhere well to stones. But paint isn't everything.

4:1603

If you want your stones to “live” longer than one season, you should also stock up on a primer, which we will use to cover the stones before painting (can be replaced with a mixture of PVA glue and white paint) and varnish, which completes our work with the stones.

4:466 4:475

If you have the appropriate skills, that is, you know how to draw well, you can create entire masterpieces. It’s more difficult if you don’t have the skills, but you want it to turn out beautifully.

Here are a few ideas that are quite easy to implement, but they always look great

(sometimes even better than masterpieces):

- patterns and ornaments; In our subjective opinion, such stones, with all the ease of work, any “twists” of the imagination of the draftsman (even a person who does not know how to draw at all) always turn out to be the most advantageous. And in the garden, laid out like souvenirs, among other stones or on the lawn - they are too good.

4:1666

The biggest secret in painting such pebbles is bright colors. The brighter they are, and the more colors you use, the more beautiful and original the result will be.

4:326 4:335

5:839 5:848 6:1352 6:1361

In the garden, decorated pebbles look best against the background of short green grass or lawn. It is also a good idea to use them among other stones, ordinary ones, not decorated. For example, in various rock gardens and other rocky garden compositions.

Everyone can choose for themselves which paintings from stones with their own hands are best to make for their bedroom or living room based on photos on the Internet or books about crafts. Their highlight is volume and texture.

Tips for beginners

Before embarking on the creative process and starting to paint on stone, it is advisable to draw up an action plan, in particular this applies to preparatory activities. So, the plan to follow consists of the following steps:

  1. Selecting stones with a surface suitable for painting.
  2. Drawing up sketches for future drawings.
  3. Selection of paints with brushes.
  4. Transferring the drawing onto the material itself.
  5. Fixing the pattern.

If each step is strictly followed, the likelihood of errors is reduced to zero. As a result, you can get interesting decorations that will fit well in literally any garden plot. This makes rock painting an attractive option for many.

Details such as painted stones are suitable not only for gardens; they can be placed in any area, and even in a residential apartment, for example, to divide the surrounding space into several zones. Even in exquisite interiors, stones with filigree painting look good. Bedroom or living room, hallway or bathroom – the solution remains relevant everywhere.

Shall we play?

In addition to visuals, many things can be adapted in games. For example, 2 sets of two colors, 5 pieces each, plus a drawn field of four segments intersecting in pairs and “tic-tac-toe” will delight everyone - both adults and children.

Taking a checkers board and 24 granites of two colors, you can play checkers with a partner. Every chess player will quickly figure out how to draw on the chips for playing chess.

If you can find 28 small, approximately identical, flat pebbles, you can play dominoes. How to decorate them? You can make all possible combinations of numbers from one to six in pairs or double combinations of six different colors.

If you draw letters, you can study the alphabet with your children and put them into words. If you have the patience to paint a considerable number of stones like this, you will be able to play “scrabble”.

The favorite game of many children is “shop”. Products can be made in any way. A special variety for a vegetable shop: oranges, tomatoes, potatoes, cucumbers, apples, cabbage... When weighing goods on scales and paying for them with cash slips at the checkout, the children learn to count.

For role-playing games, in order to act out full-fledged scenes, you can manage to arrange the pebbles so that you get entire stone cities, parks and zoos.

What stones are used for painting and what to depict?

It is believed that each zodiac sign has its own stone, but when choosing the basis for a future gift, you can skip these recommendations. The stone should be selected based solely on its physical properties: size, surface smoothness, porosity of the structure. Most often, ordinary large pebbles are used for artistic painting, which are already very smooth to the touch and therefore so convenient to paint on.

The choice of all kinds of designs for applying to stones is huge. These could be images of animals curled up into a ball. In this case, the shape of the stone will follow the shape of the animal’s body. Non-round stones can be turned into unusual little houses.

You can simply decorate the pebbles with abstract patterns or ethnic patterns as shown in the photo. This also includes painting stones using the dot technique - not at all difficult, but very stylish.

By the way, it is not necessary to apply the design to the entire surface of the stone. You can select only a small area and leave the rest of the area with unprocessed texture.

What you need to know before starting stone painting:

1) Because Most often we pick up stones from the ground; before starting work, they need to be washed very thoroughly with detergents.

2) When choosing ideas for painting on stone, you should first of all start from its shape and texture.

3)Usually small stones are used for crafts, so you will only need a little paint. If you squeeze too much onto the palette, it will still dry out quickly.

4) Because Acrylic paints dry very quickly; while painting, the brush should be regularly rinsed in a glass of water so that no dried lumps of paint remain on it.

5) The technique of painting on stone requires good vision and accuracy, because... Most often the drawings are very miniature.

6) Although there is very little room for creativity when painting on stone, paint can still get on your hair or clothes. Therefore, it is better to create in a special apron and headscarf or simply unnecessary work items.

7) The same tips apply to the workplace - the table should be covered tightly with old newspaper or film.

8) However, if you see that you have made an extra stroke on the stone itself, the mistake can be easily corrected with your own hands using a cotton swab and solvent. The main thing is that they are always at hand.

Meditative painting of pebbles is quite a fun activity. We invite you to master painting stones using acrylic paints; a master class for beginners will help you with this.

Recommendations on how to beautifully color a drawing

When choosing acrylic paint for stone, synthetic or nylon brushes are needed. Natural wool with its assistance will be destroyed.

There are exceptions when porous minerals are better, when making something with pores or holes, for example, a piece of cheese.

To prevent acrylic from hardening, use a palette and small portions.

When working with professional paints, finally bake the product in the oven for firing. This way the drawing will last longer and without cracks.

The materials are sold in both art and construction stores.

When using metallic acrylic paint, the painting will acquire a pleasant-looking shine.

To add volume to individual details, you can use a felt-tip pen.

To draw a contour, use a white or black contour pencil opposite the background.

Materials required for painting

This type of creativity, like painting pebbles, is good because nothing is required for the work except paints and stones. The product is completely environmentally friendly, as only natural materials are used. Some craftsmen also use varnish and primer, but their use depends on the choice of paint and the further use of the product.

Paints

The following types of artistic paints are most often used for painting:

  • watercolor;
  • gouache;
  • oil;
  • acrylic.

Acrylic paints are most popular when painting on rocks. Their advantage is that they dry quickly. After just a minute, the next layer can be applied to one layer. While 1 layer of oil paints, for example, will take about a week to dry.

However, this is the disadvantage of acrylic if you want to create a drawing using a large palette of colors by mixing them.

The composition also does not allow you to create relief masterpieces with thick strokes and sharp transitions. More often, difficulties arise for those who do not have a good command of the technique of working with acrylic paints.

Live drawings on pebbles.

Otherwise, acrylic is convenient for painting. The drawing turns out bright, the colors do not fade after drying. The paint applies easily even to an unprepared base and completely covers dark surfaces and previous dried layers.

Acrylic does not wash off with water. It is also resistant to sunlight. However, after completion, the design should be varnished, since acrylic from the surface of the stone is easy to scrape off.

To paint pebbles, it is better to buy acrylic in jars, since the picture is small and the paint consumption will be small. You can dip the brush directly into the jar and take out the paint. Tubes involve squeezing paint onto a palette. And this is necessary when you are supposed to mix paint and paint a picture on a large surface.

Brushes

To work with pebbles, choose the smallest brush size. You can use a soft “squirrel”; under the weight of the paint it takes on a needle-like shape with a thin tip. This brush is convenient for drawing small details. If the stone is large, then larger brushes are used to paint the background and volumetric details. In this case, you can take brushes with stiffer synthetic bristles.

Varnish

To give the pattern a beautiful glossy shine, and to preserve the pattern, the stone can be coated with a clear varnish. It can be either a construction varnish or an artistic one. The second option is preferable, as it does not smell and does not damage the brush. Some craftswomen even use transparent manicure polish. They are also convenient for covering pebbles, and the bottle with varnish already contains a brush.
