Applying primer to whitewash is a very risky task
Are you planning to paint a whitewashed ceiling and for some reason you don’t want or can’t wash off the whitewash? In some cases, you can get by by applying a special primer to it. What are these cases, and what solutions are suitable for them? I propose to look into all of the above issues together.
Preparing the room: general recommendations
Before you begin preparing ceilings for painting, it is recommended to remove all furniture and any other interior elements from the room.
Of course, it is not always possible to move a bulky wardrobe or sofa. Take plastic wrap and cover the items. It will protect them from paint and dust.
We recommend performing further steps to prepare the premises in this order:
- Turn off power. A necessary safety measure is that when working with the ceiling, you will have to wet it.
- Cover the windows with film. In addition, it is advisable to remove the lamps. Chalk splashes on them practically cannot be washed off.
- Prepare clothing for protection. Gloves will also come in handy. If you plan to work with a grinding machine, you must wear a respirator.
- Purchase or prepare the necessary tools and materials. In addition to the primer with putty, you definitely cannot do without a spatula and stepladder, a special painting knife, a long-haired roller, a narrow brush, soda and water (pour into a convenient container), a flashlight and sandpaper.
Ideally, preparing the ceiling for painting with your own hands is done in an empty room in which neither the walls nor the floor are finished. However, this possibility is not always available. More often it happens the other way around - renovations in the apartment have already been done, and after a few years there is a need to paint the ceiling.
Applying primer
When the surface is properly prepared, it is necessary to dilute the primer solution in accordance with the instructions, you need to achieve a uniform consistency, you can use a construction mixer for high-quality mixing. The easiest way to apply primer to the ceiling and walls is with a roller or wide brush. It is necessary to ensure that the mixture is applied evenly to all areas of the surface; dry areas or smudges should not be allowed. When the first layer is completely dry, it is advisable to apply a second layer of the composition. If you correctly follow the technological process of applying the primer, the whitewash will remain on the surface for a long time, and swelling and peeling will not appear for many years.
Primer selection
Today, stores sell 2 groups of soils: strengthening and deep-penetrating. Deep-penetrating mixtures are usually used for application to those buildings that are made of porous, loose materials. Used for both interior and exterior work. Strengthening primers are used in cases where the wall has been treated with any material; after such a primer, you can whitewash, paint the surface or stick wallpaper on it. Mixtures can be made from various components:
- acrylic compounds are the most popular mixtures; they can be applied to wood, plaster, concrete and brick surfaces. These primers are non-toxic and dry very quickly;
- alkyd materials are usually used for application to wooden products, they are not used for treating plastered walls and gypsum surfaces, they are usually used for painting with alkyd paints, these primers dry in a maximum of 15 hours;
- polyvinyl acetate priming compositions are special mixtures, after application of which the surface can be treated with polyvinyl acetate materials; such primers have a drying period of less than an hour.
There are other types of soil, but they are used quite rarely.
We'll tell you about the procedure for priming surfaces before whitewashing them.
Do you feel like a novice when it comes to repairs, but still take on this kind of work?
You shouldn’t worry too much that such an attempt will probably fail.
To do this, you need to thoroughly familiarize yourself with all the nuances ahead of time in order to get a good result.
So, you need to go through the preparation stage, know what materials need to be purchased and in what order to do everything. For example, if you whiten the walls, you should first treat them with a primer.
This article is dedicated to this topic.
The primer composition is used in the intervals between stages of repair work and before whitewashing. In turn, it has the following functions:
- It improves the adhesion of the surface and finishing material.
- The service life of the structure increases significantly.
- The surface is protected from corrosive processes and the colonization of harmful bacteria, fungi and mold.
Due to the presence of special additives in the product, there will be fewer pores on the surface. Also, the primer mixture ensures high adhesion and leveled bases of the structure without unnecessary defects.

Application technology
To apply primer to previously whitened surfaces, use the following tools:
- wide brush (maclovica);
- paint roller;
- a tray with a ribbed surface for priming;
- putty knife.
After such an operation, the wall or ceiling is given time to dry. Then a primer is applied to the surface.
Applying whitewash to primer
Experts say that primer must be applied before whitewashing. Why? Because it performs many useful functions, namely:
- lime mortar or a mixture with chalk will lie on the primed surface very easily, and will last a long time and reliably;
- if you prime the ceiling or walls, the layer of whitewash will not be absorbed, but will be evenly distributed, so working with the mixture will be much more convenient and easier;
- Before whitewashing, the primer reliably holds together the crumbling building or damaged areas. The primer solution applied before bleaching reliably binds small and large unstable fragments that can fall off and crumble.
So, it is necessary to prime the surface before whitening, so that the applied lime composition will last long and reliably. Every specialist who does finishing work always applies a primer for whitewashing.
Important! Experts say that before whitewashing mineral substrates, it is necessary to apply primer so that the layer holds firmly and does not crumble. The soil is absorbed and penetrates deeply into all pores and cracks, thereby creating a strong connection. This durable film increases the adhesive characteristics of mineral materials several times, thanks to which the finishing is applied very efficiently and easily.

Do-it-yourself whitewashing of the ceiling
The modern world of design dictates its own rules and laws. A special place here is occupied by ceilings, which recently can be done in different ways. Modern suspended and multi-level ceilings with lighting look incredibly beautiful and impressive, but for this elegance you need to pay a tidy sum of money, which sometimes is not left at all.
