A few words about the features of skirting boards

For the manufacture of skirting boards, foamed polystyrene is used, which is popularly known as polystyrene foam. This is a lightweight material that lends itself well to mechanical and thermal processing. Therefore, the surface of the fillets is usually decorated with relief patterns.

Despite their cheapness, polystyrene skirting boards have quite a few advantages:

  • Light weight, making them easy to install. Moreover, you can glue it directly to the wallpaper, which greatly simplifies the installation process;
  • Soft edges allow fillets to be joined closely to each other;

Polystyrene skirting board can be cut with a regular knife

  • Ease of machining . You can cut the plinth with any sharp knife (see How to properly cut a ceiling plinth);
  • Resistance to moisture - this allows the use of polystyrene skirting boards in the bathroom and kitchen;
  • Flexibility , thanks to which you can decorate ceilings and walls of complex shapes.

The disadvantages include the following:

  • The rough and grayish surface indicates that the product is budget-friendly;
  • Fragility, as a result of which skirting boards easily break during installation. True, this drawback is compensated by their low price, i.e. you can purchase fillets with a decent supply;
  • Over time, polystyrene turns yellow when exposed to sunlight.

Note! The skirting boards in question are of two types - made from regular foam polystyrene and extruded. The latter are more durable, have a clear pattern and a smooth surface. Therefore, if your budget is not very limited, when purchasing, give preference to skirting boards made of extruded polystyrene foam.

Varieties of skirting board textures

The main types that are classified according to texture parameters:

  • Smooth. It has a flat, smooth surface, without indentations, patterns or ornaments. It looks discreet and is great for decorating almost any interior.
  • Extruded. It is distinguished by longitudinal recesses with ready-made grooves.
  • Injection. It has a convex relief surface and has a granular structure. Such ceiling fillets are an independent decoration.

What sizes are there?

There are two main types: wide and narrow. Other tips for choosing the size will be listed below.

Narrow

Size range from 10 to 50 mm. Thin, laconic fillets are suitable for small rooms with low ceilings.

Wide

Allows you to visually smooth out corners and hide imperfections and unevenness of the walls. It has a range from 160 to 350 mm, and is most often used for decorating spacious rooms.

Installation rules

To install polystyrene ceiling plinths, use either a special glue or a homemade mixture consisting of putty and PVA glue. In the latter case, it is important to prevent the formation of lumps. The glue is applied in an even layer, and its remains are used to seal seams and irregularities. All unnecessary residues of the adhesive mixture are removed from the surface with a brush and water.

You cannot press the plinth to the surface, but when the glue dries, you can start painting the element. Of course, it needs to be treated with a primer first. For painting, water-dispersed types of paints are used, as well as water-based latex paints. The staining process must be repeated twice.

Varieties of fillet shapes

There are several types:

  • Straight. The traditional and most common option, which is found in almost any interior.
  • Flexible (soft). Such radius baguettes allow you to organize smooth shapes, thereby hiding imperfections, crooked corners and flaws in the ceiling space.
  • With cable channel. They have additional internal space in which you can hide wires.

Each of the listed forms carries a certain focus and functionality.

What color are the skirting boards?

Colored fillets change the overall perception of the interior and the room as a whole. In addition, ceiling plinths can be painted independently in any color.

  • White.
  • Black.
  • Gold.
  • Brown.
  • Beige.
  • Grey.
  • Chromium.
  • Yellow.
  • Blue.
  • Green.

To visually expand the space, use baguettes that match the color of the ceiling; to increase the height of the room, use ceiling plinths that match the color of the walls.

Polyurethane ceiling molding

The polyurethane type is considered the only pliable option - it can be bent in any way. This option perfectly imitates complex patterns on the ceiling.

A polyurethane profile does not turn yellow after many years. It also has high strength.

Polyurethane ceiling moldings can be painted with any paint, including oil paint. In this case, water-dispersion paint is used, to which a certain amount of the selected pigment is added in advance. This way they refresh the interior of the room.

However, polyurethane baguette profile is a very heavy building material. Over time, it peels off from its own weight.

Design options and drawings

A huge variety of decor gives baguettes a more unique look.

  • Stucco molding. Always looks expensive and respectable. It brings notes of antiquity and luxury with its appearance and is best combined with classic interiors.
  • With inserts. Inserts can be made in various colors, for example white and gold or dark wenge and silver. They are selected in combination with the color of the ceiling or walls.
  • Patterns and ornaments. They transform and enliven the ceiling space, deprive it of monotony and set a unified style for the room.
  • Ladder. The original cross-section in the form of a ladder creates a stepped ledge, which is quite popular in the design of many interiors.

Baguettes with a variety of designs harmonize the decor, give the room a special character and simply look very impressive.

Description of benefits

Polystyrene baseboards are often also called foam baseboards. And their main difference and advantage is that they come in different shapes and sizes. They may differ significantly in length and surface texture. Of course, one cannot fail to mention the low cost of the material. It is this last nuance that is the main reason why polystyrene skirting boards are used everywhere for room decoration.

However, let's take a closer look at all the advantages that are inherent in this type of skirting boards:

  1. Presentable appearance. Due to the variety of textures, skirting boards look very impressive. They can even add a special touch to the interior.
  2. Easy to install. To install polystyrene skirting boards, no special tools or equipment are required. One person can easily install it. Moreover, you can cut it into pieces with a knife or a metal file without any difficulties.
  3. Availability. Yes, low cost is precisely the factor that most often influences the choice of material for finishing the ceiling.
  4. Light weight. Even a very bulky-looking plinth weighs very little, so it will not create any additional load. This is very important when decorating a suspended ceiling with skirting boards.
  5. Resistance to the formation of microorganisms. In other words, polystyrene baseboards will never become moldy. Naturally, this greatly simplifies its care.

An important advantage is that the material withstands moisture. Therefore, such skirting boards can be safely installed even in the bathroom. The finished finish will not crack. Polystyrene itself is a material that does not shrink and does not change its dimensions with temperature fluctuations.

Those who care about the environment can be sure that polystyrene foam is a finishing option that does not pollute the environment in any way. And this does not take into account the fact that the material can be selected to suit any interior style. The edges of the plinth are quite soft, so the product perfectly hides all the flaws.

For what types of ceilings can decorative skirting boards be used?

The main types of ceiling coverings to which fillets are applied:

  • Stretch ceiling. Such a plinth not only protects and hides cracks and gaps between the walls and ceiling, but is also a rather original element of decorative finishing.
  • Suspended ceiling made of plasterboard. For plasterboard two-level or multi-level structures, almost any model will be appropriate. Skirting boards made of polyurethane or polystyrene look especially natural with suspended ceilings.
  • Wooden clapboard ceiling. Wooden figured and carved fillets in combination with the identical texture of the ceiling look luxurious and are in perfect harmony with each other.
  • PVC panels. Plastic baguettes are better suited here, as they will noticeably highlight and emphasize the design of the entire ceiling.
  • Ceiling tiles. Skirting boards will not only complete the overall design, but will also greatly simplify the gluing of ceiling tiles along the edge of the ceiling.

Advantages of polystyrene skirting boards

For a long time, baguettes were made from gypsum stucco molding - this technology has been used for many hundreds of years, but it is labor-intensive, heavy, and fragile. All of them are eliminated in modern material - polystyrene. Production technology allows us to produce products of any size and shape, which allows us to realize any design ideas. You can purchase small compact types of plinths for small rooms or massive designs for spacious rooms. In terms of appearance, the material is also varied. Flat models are available, as well as plinths with relief elements and decor - to suit any interior.

In addition, the polystyrene ceiling skirting boards themselves have a number of advantages that the material provides:

  • low weight (compared to gypsum stucco). This simplifies delivery and installation. In addition, there is no increased load on the walls;
  • low cost. Modern production significantly reduces production costs, making it possible to carry out repairs on skirting boards even on a limited budget;
  • moisture resistance. The synthetic material polystyrene does not deform and does not lose its properties when moisture gets on the surface, and also does not absorb it. Therefore, ceiling baguettes can be hung even in rooms with high humidity - for example, in the kitchen or bathroom;
  • protection against rotting, the spread of fungus and mold. Harmful microorganisms do not multiply on the surface of the baseboards;
  • easy installation. Due to their light weight, the elements can be easily fixed to the ceiling using special glue. At the same time, the ceiling plinth is easily cut into separate fragments, which allows it to be used in hard-to-reach places;
  • safety. Despite the artificial origin of polystyrene, the material is safe. It does not contain substances harmful to the body, does not release toxic compounds when exposed to moisture or heat;
  • possibility of coloring. This expands the design possibilities for using baguettes.

Illuminated skirting board ideas

The LED strip gives the baguettes an even more original and unique look. This lighting goes well with other lighting fixtures, such as a chandelier, sconce or spotlights.

Baguette with backlight

When creating beautiful interiors in a room with multi-level lighting, use a ceiling molding for LED strip. This plinth is made of wood, polyvinyl chloride, polyurethane and polystyrene foam.

LED strips are inserted into a special baguette groove, which is covered with light-diffusing plastic. Next, the ceiling profile with the lower thickened part is glued at a distance of 20 cm from the ceiling.

An LED strip is stretched from above along the perimeter of the walls. In this case, an interesting ceiling lighting effect is created in the room.

Examples for non-standard ceilings

The functionality of skirting boards makes it possible to use them even in non-standard solutions.

Two-level

On such a ceiling, baguettes look especially beautiful. In addition, they allow you to hide transitions between levels.

The photo shows a two-level ceiling structure, decorated with wide plinths.

Sloping ceiling

Skirting boards for a sloping ceiling on the attic floor in a country house or wooden house must be flexible in order to neatly frame numerous corners in the room.

Rounded

Radius fillets are perfect for rounded ceilings. Such elastic models will easily allow you to decorate semicircular corners without unnecessary problems.

How to choose a ceiling fillet?

A few recommendations for choosing a ceiling molding:

  • The fillets should preferably be combined with the color of the ceiling or walls. This way you can create a more cohesive composition.
  • Wide ceiling moldings hide defects and imperfections in the room well.
  • For low ceilings, you should not use bulky skirting boards, as they visually hide the height of the room.

How to make corners?

How to make a corner on a ceiling plinth without a miter box

Narrow fillets are cut with ordinary scissors, and with the help of a miter box, the desired cutting angle of 90 degrees is achieved. It is better to divide a wide ceiling plinth made of foam plastic with a hacksaw or a sharp knife, but with smooth rather than jerking movements, otherwise the edges will be torn and begin to crumble.

If you need to cut all the corners at once, make a 3-centimeter allowance on them, and cut off the excess along the straight joints that will be located in the middle of each wall. Don't try to squeeze in a piece of baseboard that's a little larger than you need. It’s better to cut carefully, otherwise creases and cracks will appear along the entire line. And one more thing: the glue should be made as liquid as possible, and lumps should not be allowed to form.
