Adhesive crystal, its features, types, characteristics, application and price

Glue composition

The composition includes the following components:

  • acetone;
  • resins;
  • ethyl acetate;
  • anti-eraser;
  • aliphatic, petroleum hydrocarbons;
  • chemical state stabilizers. substances;
  • ethyl acetic acid ester.

The combination of the listed components is ensured by the characteristics of the adhesive, which make it possible to glue parts of different materials.

The pungent odor is due to the presence of acetone and other thinners in the adhesive.

The components are harmful to human health, so it is necessary to work in accordance with safety rules - in a well-ventilated area, wearing a protective mask and gloves. Despite the composition, the substance is considered safe and complies with regulations and environmental standards.

Previously, the solvent toluene will be included in the composition. But since 1998 the component has been excluded. Despite this, counterfeit adhesives that contain toluene are still sold.

The glue can rightfully be considered universal, as surfaces with different structures can be glued together.

Storage

It is recommended to store Moment Crystal glue in completely closed original packaging. Storage should be carried out in a dark place at room temperature. Storage in conditions of negative temperatures is allowed (the adhesive composition will be suitable for use after thawing).

It is necessary to prevent the tube of Moment Crystal glue from falling into the hands of children. It is strictly forbidden to set the packaging on fire or throw it into an open fire. Shelf life is about 2 years. After this period, the adhesive composition will be suitable for use, but will lose some performance characteristics.

Properties and characteristics of “Moment Crystal”

The polymerized adhesive joint has the highest strength. The adhesion force between the materials is also high. The area of application of the glue is very wide, which is achieved by color - the glue is transparent.

Specifications:

  • Operating temperature – 15-30 °C above zero. The temperature during gluing may be different, but then the hardening time of the seam also changes. When t °C increases, polymerization accelerates; when it decreases, on the contrary, it slows down.
  • The temperature for using dried joints is from -35 to + 75 °C.
  • The glue is frost-resistant. Can be completely frozen and defrosted several times. The characteristics after defrosting do not differ from the original ones.
  • Approximately 200-400 g of substance is consumed per 1 m2. The number is individual and may vary depending on the type of base and the purpose of gluing.
  • The glue is moisture resistant, the properties do not change even with the direct influence of water on the mixture.
  • The optimal density value is 0.88 g/cm3.
  • Other qualities include resistance to UV rays, alkalis and acids.

It is not recommended to greatly exceed or lower the temperature at which the glue hardens. The characteristics of the finished seam may undergo changes and may not correspond to those declared by the manufacturer.

How to properly glue a crystal with glue

Obtaining strong joints during the gluing process is possible subject to the rules and conditions set out. You need to start with thoroughly treating surfaces to remove all kinds of contaminants. Depending on the condition and nature of the coating, washing the products with detergents is allowed.

If possible, treat with sandpaper. If grease or oil stains are present, wipe the surfaces with an alcohol solution or acetone. The quality of preparation of working substrates affects the success of gluing.

At the next stage, it is important to carefully open the package. The tube should be held strictly vertically. Do not allow the glue to spread or get on your hands. The glue is applied to both working sides and kept in air for 12 - 15 minutes. On porous material, the mixture may be absorbed, then the adhesive application should be repeated.

Next, apply strong pressure to the elements being connected and hold in this position for several seconds. The parts to be glued can be adjusted in position before the layer has hardened. If necessary, it is possible to separate the elements with immediate re-compression after connection.

The process of gluing with “Crystal” glue

If this is not done immediately, then subsequent adhesion of the surfaces will not allow the error to be corrected. When working with fabric materials or leather, it is important to ensure pressure from the center to the edges to prevent air from accumulating at the seam area. For this purpose, rolling rollers are used. To ensure that the adhesive layer dries completely, the product is left for 24 hours.

Manufacturers warn that, despite the moisture resistance of the joints, it is better to avoid working in rooms with increased humidity and getting drops of liquid on the surfaces being bonded. Removal of excess and random stains should be carried out immediately after completion of work.

You can clean tools after use and remove individual traces with gasoline. Sometimes pre-soaking for 1 - 2 hours is required. It is not always possible to remove stains on fabric; it is better to send the product to dry cleaning. In some cases, washing with a good detergent helps.

Scope of application

The instructions for use state that the main purpose of the glue is to glue porcelain, ceramic, glass surfaces, as well as organic glass, polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and foam plastic (polystyrene, expanded polystyrene). Waterproof properties have made it possible to use Crystal glue as a mixture for shoe repair. The hardened layer is resistant to water and other atmospheric conditions.

Other supported materials include:

Advantages

The glue is quite popular on the market due to its wide range of uses.

  1. Low cost, available in almost any hardware and construction stores.
  2. High strength crystallized seam.
  3. After drying, the seam is elastic, which allows the repaired part to be used under mechanical stress.
  4. You can glue even the most delicate objects, due to its transparency.
  5. The glue does not contain toluene.
  6. Surfaces of different materials can be bonded together.
  7. In a liquid, undried state, Moment is easily removed from the surface. You can simply roll up the composition.

Main characteristics

Before purchasing, you should make sure that the glue is really suitable for the intended operation. The properties of the substance can be read below in the form of a detailed list with a description:

  • 1. It has a transparent color, both in liquid and frozen states.
  • 2. The polyurethane base adds additional resistance to the damaging effects of atmospheric factors. Therefore, the glue can be used, among other things, for products intended for outdoor use.
  • 3. Provides a high degree of adhesion of parts due to crystallization of the seam.
  • 4. It is characterized by water resistance, so it can be used to glue, for example, a rubber boat or boots, to repair shoes and other products that, due to their duty, periodically have to come into direct contact with water.
  • 5. Can be stored for two years at temperatures from -20 to +30 degrees Celsius. The main condition for safety is the tightness of the original packaging. Otherwise, the glue dries quickly and becomes unusable. You can bring it back to life after freezing by regular defrosting, but after it crystallizes, all that remains is to throw it in the trash.
  • 6. It burns well, so work should only be carried out away from open sources of fire. Can be operated at temperatures not exceeding 70 degrees.

Release form and price

The cost depends on the place of sale (store) and ranges from 96 to 120 rubles for a minimum volume of 30 ml. May vary depending on currency fluctuations. The same volume can be packaged in other packaging:

  • show box

For different tasks, containers of different volumes are produced. It happens:

  • 0.125 l tubes show boxes;
  • full-fledged cans of 0.75 l;
  • canisters of 10 liters of substance.

The cost of the glue is higher than the standard modification, which is due to additional characteristics.

Advantages and disadvantages

The adhesive is in great demand, it has many advantages and has many differences compared to similar substances.

Its advantages:

  1. Low cost, as well as availability: it can be bought in various stores.
  2. High level of joint strength, which depends on the hardening of the product.
  3. Can be used on objects that vibrate, where there is mechanical influence, since the glue is quite elastic.
  4. Colorless, so it can be used when repairing ceramic products, decorative objects, and equipment.
  5. You can combine different types of material.
  6. The composition does not contain a dangerous diluent - toluene.

You can remove uncured substances without a thinner; it is simply removed from the base, and this is a big advantage. One of the disadvantages is the inability to use with materials that come into contact with food. Another disadvantage is the pungent odor, this is due to the acetone that is included in the substance.

How to use correctly

Exact instructions for use are always written on the packaging.

For the strongest and most durable connection, all manufacturer’s recommendations should be followed.

  1. Remove dirt from the surfaces to be bonded. Lightly roughen the surface using fine-grit sandpaper. You can get rid of grease stains with a degreaser or solvent. For the last task, acetone and pure alcohol can be used. Such substances will also help clean surfaces from old layers of paint and varnish. Additionally, household chemicals help get rid of excess traces.
  2. Apply glue to the required surfaces. If the base is of the same material, then only one part needs to be coated with glue. Otherwise, Moment should be applied to both bases.
  3. If the surfaces have a smooth structure and contain pores, then after a few minutes it is recommended to reapply the glue.
  4. The parts must be pressed together. If the bases are flat, you can clamp them in a vice or roll them with a small roller if possible, so that every millimeter is involved in gluing.
  5. Initial adhesion is achieved after 20 minutes. It takes a day for the seam to harden as much as possible and the part to be fully usable.

Correction of the position of the surfaces is possible immediately after gluing. After a few minutes the position cannot be changed. You will have to separate the bases, clean off the old layer of glue again and repeat all the steps again.

Although the glue is characterized by resistance to moisture, the manufacturing company does not recommend performing work in high humidity.

Varieties

The Moment line of contact adhesives includes the following types:

  • Moment 1 is universal – suitable for most materials;
  • Moment Crystal is a colorless polyurethane composition for various materials;
  • Moment Marathon - used in most cases in the footwear industry;
  • Moment Gel – adhesive with a gel texture;
  • Rubber moment – suitable for connecting any hard or foam rubber;
  • Torque 88 – characterized by increased strength.

Each type is sold in tubes of 30 ml and 125 ml. These compounds help to make truly reliable connections between different materials.

Limitations and safety precautions

The glue contains toxic components - solvents, which makes the composition flammable. It should be used only in personal protective equipment and in a suitable room that is well ventilated artificially or ventilated.

Exposure to toxic fumes can lead to hallucinations, dizziness and other dangerous symptoms of poisoning - nausea, vomiting. Penetration of a substance into the body through ingestion can lead to irreparable consequences - death.

If glue gets on your hands or other parts of the body, you need to wash it with plenty of water and soap. Affected mucous membranes should also be washed immediately and consult a doctor.

Containers for storing and preparing food cannot be glued together using Moment. It is also prohibited to use Teflon, polypropylene, and polyethylene products for repair.

Although the glue is universal, there can be problems with plastic. If you need to glue plastic, you must first test the reaction of the glue on the material. Take a small area on a plastic surface or a piece of plastic, drop a little Crystal and wait about half an hour. If there is no visible negative reaction (yellowing, deformation) of the base, glue can be used on the surface of the plastic. Otherwise, you need to choose a different glue for plastic.

Advantages and disadvantages

The glue is now in great demand on the market because it has a lot of advantages and compares favorably with its analogues. Its advantages:

  • low price, availability in almost all hardware, construction, and department stores;
  • excellent seam strength due to crystallization of the composition as it dries;
  • the ability to use on parts subject to vibration and mechanical impacts of moderate force due to the elasticity of the adhesive;
  • transparency, which makes it suitable for repairing souvenirs, ceramics, decor, and household appliances;
  • possibility of gluing dissimilar materials;
  • absence of the most toxic solvent – toluene.

You can wipe off “Moment” in liquid form without the help of solvents: it simply rolls off the surface, which is another advantage. The disadvantages include unsuitability for a number of materials, as well as the need to avoid contact with food. Another drawback is the unpleasant odor, which is associated with the presence of acetone.

Precautionary measures

The glue is flammable, so the following safety precautions should be observed when working with it:

  • do not open the packaging near any sources of fire,
  • do not apply glue to products located near sources of elevated temperature,
  • Do not apply glue to heated surfaces.

All actions with “Moment” are carried out only in a ventilated room (hoods or through ventilation are used). When working for a long time, even with forced ventilation, you need to wear a respirator! You should work in special clothing and gloves. If glue gets on your hands or other exposed skin, you should immediately wash them with plenty of soap and water. If the product gets into the eyes or other mucous membranes, it is important to rinse them and immediately seek medical help.

How to use it in practice?

Moment Crystal glue is transparent and copes with the task perfectly: according to consumer reviews, connections made with this substance do not lose their strength for a long time.

According to the instructions: in order to glue the surfaces, they will first need to be thoroughly dried and cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper. Then they are degreased with acetone or gasoline, after which an even layer of glue is applied to the material. Moreover, we note that both surfaces must be coated with the adhesive, and not just one. This is a common mistake made by inexperienced buyers.

Then you will need to wait about 10 minutes and firmly press the surfaces to be joined for a few more seconds. In this case, the effectiveness of the operation will largely depend on the force applied, and not on the duration of the pressure.

As a result, you can obtain a truly effective combination of materials of different natures, resistant to wear, the negative effects of high temperatures, humidity or weak solutions of acid and alkali.

When performing work, it is tedious to remember that the composition may ignite. Therefore, all operations with it must be performed exclusively away from a source of open fire and in a well-ventilated room.

It is also worth considering that all work for human safety must be carried out in special clothing. If Moment Crystal glue gets on an open area of skin, it can cause irritation, burning, allergies and other skin disorders.

You should be especially careful if children live in the house. Transparent glue Moment Crystal 125 ml should be securely hidden from the hands of a child.

Tips and tricks:

Too much glue?

Removing excess glue Moment is easy. No solvents are needed, it is completely safe.

1. Wait for the glue to dry.

2. Then wipe off the excess glue with your fingers and roll it into a tiny ball that you can throw in the trash.

Spilled glue on your clothes?

If you spill Moment contact adhesive on your clothing, don't worry. It can be easily removed by washing the clothes in a washing machine at normal temperature.

How to achieve uniform pressing of surfaces to each other when gluing?

In order for the glue to adhere well, strong short-term pressure is necessary on the surfaces to be glued.

Professionals use a special roller. At home, without a special tool, you can use a rolling pin, bottle or something similar to evenly press down the parts to be glued together.

note

Moment Gel is not suitable for the following surfaces

  • Not suitable for gluing Teflon, polyethylene, polypropylene
  • Not recommended for gluing dishes that come into contact with food.

Universal waterproof adhesive “Moment Crystal” has many advantages over other means. Its shape is very convenient, the consistency is optimal. Even when fastening delicate materials, they will not be damaged, and glue stains will not appear on the front side. Due to its excellent performance characteristics, this adhesive composition is indispensable in everyday life; it allows you to connect homogeneous and dissimilar materials.

Properties

Products of the Moment trademark are distinguished by durability, water resistance, heat resistance, and solidity. They are not characterized by expansion when drying, shrinkage, and are resistant to oils and solvents. The product has many advantages, which are complemented by wear resistance, instant adhesion and a large assortment.

However, the use of compounds of this brand has its negative sides. Firstly, since they are popular, they are often counterfeited, replaced with harmful, toxic mixtures that do not have the properties of the original. Secondly, the compositions have a specific smell. But you shouldn’t attach much importance to this, since almost no such product has a pleasant aroma. Some adhesives remain on the skin for a long time, but this cannot be called a disadvantage, but rather the consequences of careless use.

The variety of brand products consists of contact, second, wallpaper, mounting, epoxy, and universal adhesives. Don’t also forget about polyurethane foam, sealants (silicone, polyurethane, acrylic), and self-adhesive tape. That is, there is a solution for almost any case. The most popular is a universal-purpose adhesive that provides quick, reliable adhesion to any materials.
