Main characteristics of silk effect paint
Silk effect paint from Decorazza is made exclusively on the basis of a special acrylic binder. This base makes the paint material not only beautiful from an aesthetic point of view, but also environmentally friendly. Decorazza products do not contain harmful solvents, but the list of its benefits does not end there. Those who have at least once encountered silk paint for walls know that it:
- has high resistance to moisture;
- not afraid of temperature changes;
- vapor permeable - this property prevents the appearance of fungus or mold;
- dries quickly;
- presented in a variety of shades (including natural);
- easy to apply to any properly prepared surface;
- has a long service life.
Nevertheless, the main advantage of silk-effect wall paint can be seen in the photo. All people, without exception, remain completely delighted with the appearance of the finished coating. Smooth color transitions and unusual tints create an imitation of natural silk. This allows you to use paint in various stylistic directions of the interior, be it classic or minimalism. At the same time, when applying paint with a wet silk effect, the surfaces of a wall or ceiling can initially be given one or another relief or unusual texture.
Basic paint composition
Painting walls with silk paint makes the interior much more luxurious, due to the effect of covering the surface with shimmering silk fabric. Let us consider in detail what substances allow us to achieve such effects:
- acrylic-based resin, which acts as a connecting link that does not allow water to spread;
- water is an excellent replacement for solvent, which has a harmful effect on the human body;
- pearlescent pigment, which creates a silk coating.
Interesting to know! Silk-screen printing on walls is achieved due to the shimmer of pearlescent pigment, which occurs as a result of light hitting individual particles of substances. Also, it is interesting that the color of the paint applied to the wall depends on the intensity of illumination and the angle of incidence of the light rays.
Varieties of decorative paint with silk effect
Whatever option you choose, silk-effect plaster will create a coating that is resistant to wet cleaning and durable. Depending on the type of room and the planned load, it makes sense to consider different types of this finishing material. It can be paint with a natural silk effect, with a pronounced pearlescent effect, or matte. Any option is perfect for interior decoration, for example, a living room or bedroom. It is also worth remembering that you can create a large number of decorative effects: paint for wet silk with a pearlescent effect, smooth silk, pearlescent concrete and many others.
How to apply silk plaster using the wet silk method?
Water-based paint for walls and ceilings
The dry mixture is diluted with water in accordance with the instructions on the package. Next, you need to bring the composition to a homogeneous paste-like consistency using a drill with a mixer attachment. To obtain a color different from the original, tint is added. The solution should sit for half an hour. Application is carried out using a narrow trowel in a layer of no more than 2 mm.
The plaster must be allowed to sit before application; apply it in a layer of no more than 2 mm
The principle of applying a layer of plaster using the wet silk method is similar to finishing with Venetian silk plaster: the mixture is lightly rubbed with short, chaotic strokes in different directions. After the first layer has dried (about six hours), the second is applied using overlapping movements similar to brickwork. A more expressive effect can be achieved after applying the third layer. However, it should be remembered that the imitation of wet fabric can only be achieved through thin and consistent application.
The method of applying plaster is identical to the standard one
Wall paint with natural silk effect
This is a true classic that will never become outdated and will always look perfect in combination with various furniture and decorative items. In the Decorazza line it is presented as Seta silk effect wall paint, which:
- has a wide color palette;
- easy to apply to the surface;
- easy to restore (if local restoration of certain areas is required);
- can be combined with other shades, acquiring original color transitions;
- not afraid of wet cleaning.
Application
Most often, this coating is used in the interior design of a bedroom. At the same time, a silk-matte or silky-glossy finish on bed linen gives it a sophisticated and presentable appearance. When silky matte paint is applied to the wall covering, the bedroom becomes more elegant and luxurious.
Very often, interior specialists suggest using this decorative material for interior design. This technology is used both for finishing small apartments and large country houses and restaurants. And the larger the area of paint application, the more elegant the interior of the room looks, in which noble tints and exquisite shimmer of shades of paint and varnish material are well combined.
The paint, which contains liquid silk, is used not only for decorating the walls of rooms, but has also become indispensable when decorating the ceiling. In the modern world of design, PVC stretch ceilings are not a novelty. However, they reduce the area of the room, making it smaller. If you paint the ceiling with a coating of liquid silk, this will make the surface of the stretch ceiling more presentable and mesmerizing to the eye. At the same time, the silk covering will not reduce the volume of the room, making it smaller.
Wet silk paint with pearlescent effect
The pearlescent shade will add luxury and sophistication to the interior. Unobtrusive mother-of-pearl will emphasize the visual depth of color, as well as its multidimensionality. In this case, the technique of applying the material and operating the coating will be as simple as in the case of the previous version. Pearlescent decorative paint from Decorazza - Seta da Vinci, which is economically used (only 200 grams per 1 square meter!), provides improved coverage and allows for wet cleaning. This is guaranteed by a high-quality binder and special additives included in the material.
Advantages and disadvantages
Mirror effect paint
The finishing material is unique and has a lot of advantages:
- Silk plaster can be used to decorate walls and ceilings in various types of rooms. It looks beautiful in the corridor, hallway, and is relevant in the bedroom, living room, study, children's room and home library.
- The effect of the finished surface looks better than any type of wallpaper and other finishing materials. The appearance of the finished cladding creates an elegant background for the interior.
- This material is an environmentally friendly raw material. There are no harmful components in the composition, therefore, during operation, toxins that are harmful to health will not be released from the surface.
- Among the components of decorative plaster are antimicrobial additives, thanks to which fungus or mold will not grow on the walls.
- This coating is antistatic. It is not electrified, and during operation dust will not be attracted to it, so the surface will look neat.
- Due to plasticizers, the cladding will be resistant to minor deformation of the walls themselves. If a small crack may form on the base, the cladding will not tear, but will stretch without disturbing the solidity of the surface.
- Decorative silk plaster has good sound insulation properties. It will reduce the level of annoying sounds that often come from neighboring apartments.
- This finishing material has thermal insulation properties, due to which the room where the walls will be finished with this material will become warmer. At the same time, the structure of the material is capable of permeable air.
- Thanks to a wide range of shades, the material allows surface finishing in the form of a single-color canvas or a pattern according to an individual sketch, which is formed after applying the base coat.
This composition usually dries within 24 hours, although some varieties can dry up to 4 days. It is sold in powder form and in small plastic buckets. Consumption is approximately 150-300 g per 1 square. m, it depends on the thickness of the applied layer and the type of tool for distributing the mass over the surface of the base.
In addition, this composition is practical and durable. With proper preparation of the base and application technology, it will serve as an interior decoration for up to 10-15 years. However, to extend its durability, the coating will have to be treated with additional compounds.
In addition to this nuance, decorative silk plaster has several other disadvantages:
- The cost of this finish is quite high; not every buyer can purchase it for decorating interior walls. On average, a square meter of finishing will cost from 600 to 950 rubles.
- The product absorbs various odors, which is especially bad if there is smoking or cooking in the room.
- To add texture, you will have to apply the material to the base twice.
- The surface for such finishing must be prepared as carefully as possible, otherwise the appearance of the cladding will not look beautiful.
- The method of surface treatment with this composition is more painstaking than wallpapering, so one day may not be enough to complete a high-quality coating.
Silk paint for walls with a matte effect
The matte effect is especially good in cases where the overall interior concept provides for some restraint or Scandinavian style. The silky matte finish is something unique. Delicate color shifts and a noticeable velvety texture complement each other, and the end result will be simply delightful. In the Decorazza collection, the decorative paint with a matte silk effect is called Velluto and is available in 36 different shades. Like other coatings from Decorazza, Velluto is easy to apply to pre-prepared surfaces and is not too fussy in terms of operation and cleaning. If necessary, it can be tinted in the color you need using computer tinting technology.
Basic rules for using paints
In order to properly perform decorative processing with silk coating, the following work will be required:
- Padding
For this work, you will need a special moisture-proofing primer, which must be applied to the selected surface. At the same time, it is worth making sure that it is absolutely smooth, without any chips, potholes or cracks. If necessary, you need to carry out repair work on the walls, and only after that proceed with primer treatment.
- Base layer
Before moving to this stage, the walls need to dry very well. This stage is important because the base color is applied here. After drying, you will need to grout and smooth out any inaccuracies.
- Protective varnish
This product performs a protective function. This is especially true for rooms with high moisture content. One layer can be applied, but for greater efficiency, experts recommend applying at least two, since this is the only way to obtain a uniform and fully protected surface.
How to apply silk wall paint: photos and instructions
First of all, you need to make sure that the surface being treated is sufficiently smooth and free of defects. The remains of wallpaper and old paint are removed, and the wall or ceiling is covered with putty or finishing plaster. Next, the surface is primed, which will ensure good adhesion of the paintwork. The process of applying a decorative coating largely depends on what paint you have chosen and what effect you want to achieve:
- The classic in this case is the effect of natural silk. The first layer of decorative paint is applied to the dried Base paint. Using a Venetian trowel, using multidirectional movements, you form the desired pattern. 12 hours after the first layer, a second layer of decorative material is applied in a similar way.
- The effect of wet or crinkled silk. With the first layer of decorative paint, you peel off the entire surface. After 6-12 hours, a second layer of paint is rolled in small sections using a roller. Without allowing the material to dry, a pattern is formed using a round plastic trowel. The time for complete drying of the second layer is 24 hours.
You can see in the photo that silk wall paint will have an attractive appearance no matter what effect you ultimately choose. However, to ensure a velvety texture, it is necessary to adhere to a specific technology and take into account such nuances as temperature and humidity in the room during the application process.
