Protection of wooden windows: choice of paint and varnish material and painting technology

Good day everyone and have a good spring mood! There is an important and also interesting issue on the agenda. We will talk about how to paint wooden windows on the outside.

Even though we are already in the 21st century, the popularity of wooden windows is not decreasing. And this applies not only to wooden houses. Now they are installed in apartments, dachas, private houses, as well as cottages and country villas.

A window made of wood combines an elegant appearance, high strength and reliability, and a long service life. They are much more refined than modern metal-plastic structures. Although they are inferior in terms of thermal insulation and sound insulation indicators.

Another nuance is the need for protective treatment.

It doesn’t matter whether the window is made of wood in the country house or on the balcony. The outer part faces the street. Therefore, you need to decide what the best paint will be, and what is preferable to paint the elements so that they do not peel off next season.

I’ll tell you right away whether it’s possible to paint with interior compositions. In theory it is possible. In practice I don't recommend it. They are not designed for such loads. Therefore, they quickly crack, peel, and also lose their appearance.

Wood is a natural material. It is important to protect it from external influences. The main enemies are moisture, dampness, ultraviolet radiation, temperature changes, as well as insects and microorganisms. Antiseptics protect against the latter. But paints will fight against dampness, moisture and radiation.

How to choose paint for wooden windows

When deciding what paint to paint wooden windows, you should remember that wood is susceptible to the negative effects of moisture.
When deciding what paint to paint wooden windows, you should remember that wood is susceptible to the negative effects of moisture.
This is important to consider when purchasing a coloring composition. You should pay attention to additional characteristics.

Types of paints for wood

There are many types of wood paints on the construction market.

First of all, they differ in composition. The components affect the performance and protective properties of coatings.

Oily

In previous years, oil paint for wooden windows was considered the most popular. It has excellent protection against moisture, ultraviolet radiation, and chemical exposure. However, the coating is short-lived. The service life is up to 3 years, after which repainting will be required. In addition, the use of oil compositions has nuances: paintwork takes a long time to dry and has an unpleasant odor when applied.

Acrylic

Polymer water-borne compounds are often used when painting wooden structures. They are environmentally friendly, have a high degree of protection from moisture and weathering. Acrylic painting materials are easy to work with and dry quickly. The service life of the coating is about 7 years. If the question arises of how to paint wooden windows using old paint, then this option is the most optimal.

Nitrocellulose

Nitrocellulose varnishes are considered a type of alkyd composition. They do not contain any coloring pigment. When applying a transparent layer of paint, the natural texture of the wood is preserved and emphasized as much as possible. When painting window frames, it is important to ensure constant ventilation, since acetone, which has an unpleasant odor, is used as a solvent.

Alkyd

The compositions provide protection for wooden windows from moisture and atmospheric influences. The coating can withstand high and low temperatures. The service life of this paint is up to 4 years. Window frames are easy to maintain and easy to clean.

Choice of colors

As for the color palette, the choice here falls entirely on the shoulders of the home owner. As a recommendation, the following combinations can be recommended:

  • For interiors of any design, traditional white color is always suitable;
  • for windows facing north, you can use warm colors;
  • It is advisable to give cold shades to windows located on the south side of the room;
  • if the facade of the house is made in muted colors, then the windows should be given a bright and rich shade;
  • for finishing windows in a classic wooden house, which is made in the Russian style, only varnish or a matte glaze composition can be used;
  • if you need to visually increase the area of the room, then in this case you need to use bright shades of yellow both for the room itself and for the windows installed in it.

The color of the window frame should be combined with both the facade and the interior of the home.
The main thing in this matter is that the window frames are in harmony with both the facade of the house and the interior of the apartment.

Popular manufacturers

Domestic and foreign manufacturers offer various compositions that can be used to paint wooden frames and provide them with proper protection.

Which paint to choose can be determined after carefully studying its composition, taking into account the nuances of the surface being painted.

Tex (Russia)

The domestic manufacturer offers coloring compositions at an affordable price with high technical parameters that compete with foreign products. The materials are perfectly adapted to use in the Russian climate. The coating lasts up to 7 years, subject to application technology and proper care.

Tikkurila (Finland)

The company offers several product lines for painting wooden windows and other wood structures. Paintwork materials are presented in a wide range of colors. There are glazing varnishes and impregnations that highlight the natural structure of the wood. The coating can withstand negative atmospheric influences, is resistant to temperature fluctuations and mechanical stress. During production, antifungal components are added to the compositions.

Dufa (Germany)

The German brand, known all over the world, produces coatings for various areas of use. Painting materials for wooden windows have a rich range of colors. They are resistant to ultraviolet radiation, are not susceptible to the development of fungus and mold, and resist the invasion of insects and rodents. The compositions are easy to apply and evenly distributed. Caring for the coating is simple, since window frames can only be washed with soapy detergents.

Caparol (Germany)

Caparol is a German brand that owns the Alpina brand. Both names are known to builders and amateurs in this field. Alkyd paints and glazing water-soluble coatings are most common for painting wooden windows. In addition to high protective characteristics, the compositions are economical in consumption, which allows reducing costs when painting.

Sniezka (Poland)

Products that are of high quality and reasonable cost. The protective characteristics of the paints are high and the service life is long. The manufacturer's line includes compositions based on alkyd, acrylic and oil. During manufacturing, auxiliary substances are added to paintwork materials that enhance protection against ultraviolet radiation, as well as prevent damage from fungus and mold.

The first selection criterion is composition and properties

Types of coatings

In any store, large or huge, the salesperson is not your ally. He is paid a percentage of sales, so any employee will try to sell the buyer a more expensive product. This is normal, the usual invisible hand of the market, but knowing this, you can save a lot.

Unusual and original color of plastic

To the question “Which paint is better?” - you will always get the answer - “This one, this is Finland, England, Belgium.” To the question “Why?”, the answer is standard “After all, these are foreign technologies.”

To be able to make your own choice, you need to know the main differences between the four main types of paints for window frames.

Polyurethane coatings for windows

Varnish will help highlight the beauty of natural wood

The main constituent element of the composition is polyol (a fraction of polyurethane resin). For strength and wear resistance, the composition additionally includes hardeners that form a durable protective film on the surface of the frame.

Advantages of polyurethane paints:

  • Excellent covering power.
  • Good adhesion to any rough surfaces (wood, metal, plaster).
  • Resistant to moisture.
  • Dries quickly, odorless.
  • Can be used at low temperatures.
  • Does not fade when exposed to sunlight.

It is cheaper to use a polyurethane primer

But there are also significant disadvantages:

  • The paint forms a durable and elastic film on the surface that prevents the penetration of air vapor. Therefore, this coating should not be used for outdoor work. Window frames from the outside will be covered with tiny droplets of water during temperature changes, since the temperature difference in winter is significant.
  • The price of such paint is quite high, you can choose a composition with similar characteristics and cheaper.

Cost from 3500 rubles and above

Polyurethane is a relatively new type of paint on the construction market, and it is this type of coating that sellers will recommend for plastic windows. It is important to pay attention to the fact that this is a water-soluble option with the addition of acrylic. For example, “PaliPlast RP Base” is a water-based acrylic urethane. Price per liter is 3200 - 3500 rubles, not cheap.

It is easier to purchase two-component acrylic and polyurethane paint, which improves the durability of the coating and is much cheaper.

Acrylic water-dispersion paints

Acrylic coatings are easy to apply, durable and practical

The most convenient and budget option for all types of window frames. The base is acrylic resins dissolved in water. This is the answer to the question of what paint to paint windows in an apartment, both wooden and plastic. Excellent characteristics and minimum disadvantages:

  • Environmentally safe, recommended for any premises, including children's rooms and bedrooms.
  • They dry very quickly - one, maximum three hours at high humidity and low temperature.
  • Does not fade over time and does not fade.

Getting wood wet causes rot and mold.

  • Resistant to moisture - this is an easy to clean paint. You can update the coating quickly and without much hassle yourself.
  • It is perfectly absorbed and forms a strong, wear-resistant film.
  • Resistant to low temperatures and temperature changes.
  • Air and vapor permeable.
  • You can use color to create any desired color, and not be limited to choosing a few standard shades.

You can choose any color saturation

Acrylic paint is white, so you need to buy a color scheme. It is inexpensive - from 30 to 80 rubles. Some people simply paint the frames white, and then suffer from the fact that the windows require weekly cleaning.

You can choose any color, according to the table, by adding color

Brown paint for plastic windows is a popular decor. You can make any shade of brown from white acrylic paint for plastic by adding a certain color pigment. For plastic windows, the best option is Dali enamel, semi-matte, 280 rubles per kilogram, W126 enamel - 450 rubles per kilo, matte.

One master advised me to add a little creamy shade, perhaps yellowish or brownish, depending on the color of the room’s decoration and facade. The tint makes dust and dirt on the surface less noticeable.

The choice of design depends only on imagination

It is important to pay attention to the additives that are added to improve certain characteristics of the coating.

All manufacturers position, in principle, the same composition; nuances can only be in special additives and additives that improve technical characteristics. Additives that improve individual characteristics:

  • Antiseptic - needed for wooden window frames. Prevents the appearance of mold and mildew. But you can buy the composition without these additives if, before painting, you treat the wood with a deep penetration impregnation against fungus and mold.
  • Water-repellent - thanks to these additives, water does not penetrate under the coating. But these additives reduce the breathability of the paint. Therefore, they are necessary mainly for outdoor work, as well as additives that increase frost resistance.
  • Fire retardant (fire retardant) – prevent fire, resistant to high temperatures. Such additives are needed not only for frames, but also for slopes and window sills, otherwise their use is simply impractical.

Cost approximately 250 rubles

For metal window sills, good, inexpensive domestic fireproof metal paint “Polistil” is suitable.

  • Paint for window frames for exterior use must be frost-resistant so that it does not crack at low temperatures, as well as waterproof. It costs ten percent more than materials for interior work.

All these additives can be added with your own hands or pre-treated with deep penetration impregnation with certain properties. You can save 10 percent of costs, but, personally, I don’t see the point in this. The cost of acrylic enamel, for example, “Rainbow” is 140 - 150 rubles per kilogram.

Alkyd enamels

Colored frames are a fashionable feature of the 2016 season

The coating is based on alkyd varnish, coloring pigments and a synthetic solvent (white spirit). Filler to give the paint a beautiful texture - marble chips, quartz sand, granite dust. Fillers give the paint increased strength, so it is an ideal solution for slopes and window sills.

Exterior finishing of frames and window sills with alkyd coating provides a guarantee of 10 years or more. Therefore, it is a good choice for outdoor use.

Dust and dirt are very noticeable on a white surface

Advantages and disadvantages of alkyd enamels:

  • Strength and durability.
  • Beautiful glossy finish.
  • Does not fade in the sun.
  • Withstands sudden temperature changes and frosts over 20 degrees.
  • Resistant to moisture.

The big disadvantage is toxicity and a pungent odor, but the strength characteristics are ideal for outdoor use.

Oil enamels and paints

New – wood oils from , 650 rubles per liter

A well-known coating for any surface. But they are gradually being forced out of the construction market by more universal and convenient analogues. The only advantage of oil paints is the price; two kilograms costs no more than 100 rubles.

It takes a long time to dry, the smell is persistent, but you can save a lot if you dilute the dye with any solvent. This will increase the amount of enamel, but will reduce the protective properties of the paint.

Enamels for metal surfaces

Hammer-forged enamel, quick-drying

For metal grilles and window sills, only metal coatings are suitable. This should be indicated on the label. Special additives against corrosion and rust are added to such paints. These coatings also have special characteristics of viscosity and adhesion to the surface.

I was advised to use aerosol enamel for the grilles and window sill, and it turned out just great. No drips or sagging – a flat and smooth surface. Matte paints look perfect, but they quickly collect dust and dirt. I think it is better to choose glossy options.

Preserves metal from corrosion

The color imitates non-ferrous metals (aluminum, copper, silver, gold), looks great, and does not rust. The best option is Nerjamet-aerosol, the cost of a 0.5 liter can is approximately 200 rubles. The consumption is small, enough for two window sills and two grilles of one cylinder.

Alkyd enamels in spray guns do not rust, there is a wide range of colors to choose from, and the coverage is good with little material consumption.

How to paint wooden windows correctly

Having chosen what paint to paint wooden windows, you should carefully prepare for the work so that the result is perfect. High-quality paintwork materials and adherence to painting technology are a guarantee of a beautiful and reliable coating.

Materials and tools

In addition to the dye, you will need to prepare additional tools for applying paint to wood: a roller or brush, a tray with ribbed edges. You will also need devices and impregnations to prepare the wooden surface:

  • antiseptic;
  • putty knife;
  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • sandpaper;
  • masking tape.

When all the materials and tools are ready, you can proceed to preparing the windows for painting.

Dismantling and preparing windows for painting

Dismantling windows begins with removing glazing beads. This will allow you to remove the glass. If the glass remains in place, the edges should be taped to prevent paint from getting onto the window.

It is important to remove nails and screws in order to properly treat the surface of the paintwork. The fittings are also replaced. Broken elements are replaced with new ones after painting.

Puttying and sanding

Further preparatory procedures consist of removing the old coating and sealing defects in wooden frames. The wood is treated with an antiseptic, after which a layer of putty is applied. After drying, the surface is cleaned with sandpaper. If necessary, the wood is puttied again. Sanding allows you to sand the wood. To do this, use a drill, sandpaper or machine. New glazing beads are also pre-sanded and painted separately.

How to remove old paint

To remove old coating, 3 methods are used:

  1. The thermal method allows you to remove paint using a hair dryer. When heated, the layer of paint peels off from the frame.
  2. Mechanical cleaning involves cleaning using grinding devices: spatulas, sandpaper, etc.
  3. Chemical involves using solvents and substances to remove old paint from wood.

In some cases, it is advisable to combine 2 methods.

Primer

Before priming, the wood is degreased. It is possible to apply antiseptic impregnation, but most primer mixtures contain an antiseptic. The primer is applied in an even layer. Prime the surface with a roller or brush. The primer is selected depending on the type of wood paint used.

Painting

The paint is pre-prepared: stirred and diluted, if necessary. The coating is applied in 2-3 layers. The first one should be as thin as possible. The second and third are thicker. They are responsible for protection and decorative functions. When painting, it is important to ensure uniformity so that no smudges form and there are no unpainted areas left.
