Imitation of wood with paints: scope and features of applying “liquid wood”, how to do without special paints

Applying wood textures to various surfaces using paints and varnishes has been practiced for a long time by professional artists and designers.

But, as it turns out, there is a special paint on the market that imitates wood. We will talk about the characteristics of these coatings and methods of application in this article.

Applying the texture of a wood cut with a rubber matrix

Kaowa Sementol - paint that imitates noble wood

Giving antique stucco molding a “wooden” look, restoring old doors, transforming a boring interior - all this is only possible with the help of Kaowa Sementol paint.
Developed by Spanish specialists, the paint has an extraordinary property - when applied, it exactly repeats the pattern of wood. A wide variety of colors, as well as the ability to mix different shades with each other, provide a wide field for experimentation.

Turning metal or plastic into wood is easy

On the Internet you will find many videos in which professional artists, using special brushes, foam swabs and other means, recreate the texture of wood on various objects. After varnishing, objects finished in this way are practically indistinguishable from their wooden counterparts.

Stock up on the necessary tools, patience and try to do something like this. Unfortunately, you most likely will not be able to draw the texture of wood by hand. But don’t despair, there is a way out - this is a special paint that imitates the structure of wood.

For example, in some specialized stores you will find paints and varnishes presented by the KAOWA SEMENTOL brand. On cans of these products you will see such designations as “mahogany paint” or oak, ash, teak, etc.

That is, these paints and varnishes make it possible not only to imitate the arrangement of wood fibers on certain surfaces, but also to reproduce the texture of valuable or exotic wood species. This advantage is especially important when decorating furniture and other elements of the surroundings.

Scope of application

The photo shows a variety of paint colors that imitate wood texture

Special paints and varnishes, sold as liquid wood paint, are intended for treating various surfaces with high and medium density. These coatings can be used both for interior finishing work indoors and for exterior finishing.

The paint can be applied with equal success to wood, plastic, metal, ceramic, glass and other substrates with a matte, smooth and glossy surface. Specialized paints to imitate wood texture do not contain wood-based fillers and are therefore resistant to the negative effects of environmental factors.

As already mentioned, the use of special compounds is important when decorating furniture and other elements in the interior with your own hands.

These paints are widely used in workshops involved in improving car interiors. Thanks to special paints and varnishes, unpresentable plastic dashboards, lids of various boxes and other surfaces in the car can be made “wooden”.

Despite the fact that the price of paints and varnishes that imitate the texture of wood is several times higher than the cost of traditional enamels, this method is still more affordable than paying for the services of a professional artist.

Features of applying “liquid wood”

The use of special paints and varnishes is no more difficult than ordinary painting of wood. But there is one condition: you must use the right tool: a hard, flat brush based on natural bristles.

The length of the bristles determines how pronounced the texture of the wood will be. That is, if you need the fibers to be well drawn, use a brush with short bristles. The longer the bristles, the more poorly defined the texture will be.

The paint is applied directly from the can without special preparation and without the use of solvents. It is necessary to decide in advance on the required color, since it will not be possible to change the tone or color of the paint during application.

Important: Special paint designed to imitate wood is not mixed, but only shaken immediately before opening the can.

It is necessary to prepare the surface before decorating in the same way as before applying any paints based on organic solvents. That is, the base is cleaned of unevenness and dirt, primed and only then painted.

If a glossy finish is being decorated, it should be matted with zero sandpaper to ensure maximum adhesion.

Forming veins with a hard brush

The paint is applied in long stripes from one edge of the product to the other. You should not rub the applied layer, as is done with conventional coatings, as the texture of the imitation wood fibers will be damaged. A shiny film appears literally 15 minutes after application, and complete drying occurs in 1-3 hours, depending on temperature and humidity.

According to people who have used KAOWA SEMENTOL in accordance with the instructions indicated, the finished coating is an order of magnitude superior in quality and similarity to cut wood.

What can be painted with wood paint?

Yes, almost anything! The main thing is that the surface is not porous. If the surface is glossy, it will be enough to treat it with fine sandpaper before application.

The paint has high adhesion to almost any material: wood, metal, plastic or glass. The tiles can also be painted to look like wood! If the material was previously coated with paint or varnish, this is not a problem. Kaowa Sementol will perfectly cover any layer of paintwork. It is also suitable for painting floors and stairs, only after drying it will have to be treated with parquet varnish to make it resistant to mechanical stress.

The artist's imagination is not limited by anything - you can paint literally anything. But most often Kaova is used to update the appearance of old or not very presentable-looking furniture. You can paint refrigerators, car interior elements, plastic windows inside and out. The only thing is don’t forget to remove the fittings or cover them with film.

Yes, and one more thing: the paint has excellent hiding power and covers most surfaces the first time.

Instructions for applying Kaowa SEMENTOL paint

Before applying Kaova SEMENTOL, it is recommended to treat the surface with fine sandpaper, shake the jar for 30 seconds, and under no circumstances dilute it with dyes or solvents. Apply thickly, but without streaks, strictly with a brush and only in one direction (in the direction you want the wood structure to be). Can only be mixed with KAOWA brand paint.

Surface preparation

Surface preparation is carried out depending on its type. Porous surfaces must first be coated with a good base and allowed to dry completely. Shiny surfaces must first be matted using sandpaper. Shake the jar for 30 seconds; under no circumstances should it be diluted with dyes or solvents.

Do not mix Kaowa SEMENTOL “Liquid Wood” paint with paints of other brands. For painting, use a clean and dry brush. Apply thickly (but without streaks) strictly with a brush and only in one direction (in the direction you want the wood structure to be). Can only be mixed with KAOWA brand paint

Applying paint

Apply paint generously and spread over the surface using upward movements of the brush to avoid drips. Then, without additionally wetting the can, distribute the already applied layer of paint with horizontal movements, achieving an evenly coated, smooth surface, returning excess paint from the brush to the can. In order to prevent premature drying, large surfaces should be divided into 2-3 parts vertically so that the connection of the veins is not noticeable.

Thanks to its special composition, the paint begins to dry within the first 15 minutes after application, and after 2 hours the surface to be painted can be touched. After this time, in cases where it is necessary, varnish can be applied to surfaces exposed to extreme external influences. Before complete drying and the final appearance of the color of the painted surface, it is recommended to wait 3-4 days, depending on humidity and air temperature.

Creating a vein effect

Choose a suitable brush (No. 24-27) with not very thick bristles. Gently move the brush vertically (or horizontally, if necessary). Draw a single line with the brush, without interrupting the vein that appears with each brush stroke. The veins will have different color intensities depending on the amount of pressure applied to the brush.

The surface color can be corrected within 15 minutes after application. After this time, a film forms on the surface and the paint begins to dry. If after painting you are not satisfied with the result obtained, remove the paint, or wait until it has completely dried and repeat the application of paint.

How to do without special paints

In the photo - hand-drawn texture

What to do if there are no special compounds to imitate the texture of wood in the nearest hardware stores, and most likely they will not appear, but it is necessary to decorate this or that surface?

In this case, you will have to awaken your creative potential and get to work.

  • In order to paint a wooden surface, we will need acrylic paints and varnish on a similar base . We select paints of two colors: one is dark brown, the other is several tones lighter, closer to beige. We also use two types of flat brushes with stiff bristles. One brush with longer bristles and the other with shorter bristles.
  • We prepare the surface . We clean it from dirt and dust and prime it if necessary.
  • Apply dark paint as the first layer . The layer should be uniform and should be applied with a long-bristled brush. When the first layer is completely dry, you can begin applying the texture.
  • Apply light paint as a second layer, also using a long-bristled brush..

In the photo - a tool for simulating wood using simple paints

  • Then we wait until the second layer begins to dry, take a short-bristled brush and draw one line across the coating from side to side . Veins resembling wood fibers will appear on the surface of the painted coating.

Tip: If the brush is not hard enough, you can use a clothes brush to apply texture.

  • After the second coat of paint has completely dried, you can apply varnish..
