Description of material

Primer AK-070 is a chemically resistant primer that is used in different climatic conditions - in cold, temperate, tropical climates, in dry and humid environments. After applying the material, products are used indoors and outdoors. After use, a thin film is created on surfaces with the following properties:

  1. Heat resistance.
  2. Resistant to abrasion and mechanical damage.
  3. Resistance to current, moisture, including saline solutions and sea water.
  4. Reliability under the influence of petroleum products, mineral oil, gases, acids, and other chemicals.

Priming with AK-070 can be carried out after using paints and varnishes; compatibility is good. The primer is best combined with paint based on nitrocellulose, pentaphthalic enamels, as well as with the following paints:

  • epoxy;
  • perchlorovinyl;
  • glypthal;
  • acrylic;
  • alkyd-styrene;
  • alkyd-acrylic;
  • oil

The product, which is produced in accordance with GOST 25718-83, contains pigments, acrylic resins, plasticizers, and a number of polymer additives. The base part of the primer is inorganic varnishes, which consist of ethyl alcohol, butyl alcohol, toluene, butyl acetate.

Safety

When priming AK-070 metal with your own hands, you should adhere to certain safety rules.

They are due to the fact that the base of the soil - organic solvents - is flammable and toxic; Moreover, they have a pronounced narcotic effect on the person inhaling the vapors and irritate the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract and eyes.

  1. All work is carried out at a considerable distance from sources of open flame, sparks and strong heat.
  2. Ventilation is mandatory, as is the use of personal protective equipment - goggles, respirators or gas masks.

There are no special restrictions on the use of primer based on the type of metal; it is suitable for almost all metal surfaces.

Safety and storage conditions

According to the advice, the entire processing procedure should be carried out using personal protective equipment to protect yourself.

There should be no fire sources nearby.

If you do not use a mask, gloves, or special clothing, you can become poisoned by toxic fumes, and this is dangerous to health.

The shelf life of the primer is six months from the date of manufacture, storage should be at temperatures up to +30.

Characteristics of the product

The technical characteristics of the AK-070 primer relate to its properties, which are prescribed in GOST. After drying, the film should have a yellowish color, there should be no inclusions, craters, depressions or cracks, it should be smooth, without wrinkles. Other parameters that are regulated by GOST are as follows:

  • the percentage of non-volatile substances in the soil composition is 13.5–16%;
  • viscosity according to the data of the VZ-246 viscometer, 4 mm nozzle at a temperature of +20 degrees - 13–20 ˚С;
  • drying time to the third degree at a temperature of +20 degrees - 30 minutes;
  • film elasticity at bend - 1 mm;
  • the impact strength of the created coating using the U-1 device is 50 cm;
  • coating hardness using a TML device - 0.4 units;
  • acid number of the material - 0.3 mg/KOH;
  • surface grip - 1 point;
  • degree of grinding - 30 microns;
  • thickness of one layer - 8–15 microns;
  • operating temperatures when using the product: -45…+60 degrees.

According to the specifications, the product should be applied with a spray gun or brush. Its consumption per layer is 115–153 grams per square meter. The specific number depends on the quality of surface preparation and the method of applying primer. If it is necessary to reduce the viscosity of the material, solvents such as R-5, R-648 should be used.

Application

It is necessary to carry out preliminary preparation of the surface for painting in accordance with GOST 9.402 (degree of purification from oxides - 2, degree of degreasing - 1) or according to MS ISO 8501-1 (to the degree of Sa2 ½ or St3). Before applying primer to metal surfaces covered with corrosion, it is necessary to treat the rusty areas using a rust modifier. The primer is applied to the surface by pneumatic spray or brush. Before use, make sure that the primer is well mixed and uniform throughout the container. If necessary, the primer before application can be diluted to a working viscosity of 12-18 s using a VZ-246 viscometer with a nozzle diameter of 4 mm at a temperature of (20.0±0.5) °C with solvents 648 or R-5A. The parameters of painting methods must comply with GOST 9.105. The prepared AK-070 primer is applied to the surface of the protected metal with a brush or pneumatic spray at an ambient temperature of 5 ° C to 30 ° C and a relative humidity of no higher than 80%! To prevent moisture condensation, the surface temperature must be at least 3 °C above the dew point. After the primer layer has dried (depending on the brand, 0.5 - 1 hour, at a temperature of 20 ° C), subsequent layers of primer are applied, and then the surface paint and varnish material. To dilute the primer and wash the tool, you can use the solvents listed above.

Application of primer AK-070

The primer is used according to the traditional application scheme. When purchasing AK-070, it is necessary to provide for the need to dilute it. Solvents R-648 and R-5A are perfect for this. In addition to this function, the solvent can be used to degrease the surface, as well as to clean the tools you will be working with. The primer consumption will be approximately 70-120 g per square meter of surface.

Before applying the primer, the surface must be cleaned of dirt, free of rust, if any, and degreased. The primer is diluted with a solvent, thoroughly mixed and applied with a brush or spray, depending on the specifics of the surface. Application of the primer must be done at air temperatures from +5 to +30C. It is not recommended to carry out work in the presence of precipitation - snow or rain.

The number of layers should be 1-2. One coat of primer will dry very quickly - in 30 minutes, and this at a temperature of 20C! This will give you the opportunity to reduce the time spent on painting work. After priming is completed, a translucent yellow coating is formed.

The following compositions can be applied to the applied primer layer:

  • perchlorovinyl
  • two-component epoxy products
  • pentaphthalic enamel
  • acrylic paint
  • glypthal enamel
  • varnish
  • alkyd and oil-styrene substances
  • putty PF-002
  • pigment suspension in resin solution.

Primer composition

The primer is represented by the following composition:

  • polymer inclusions
  • plasticizer

Technical characteristics of the AK-070 primer

Among the technical characteristics, the following should be noted:

  • Touch dry time: no more than thirty minutes
  • mass fraction of non-volatile substances: from 13.5 to 16%!
  • layer thickness: from eight to fifteen micrometers
  • operating temperature range of the AK-070 primer: from minus forty-five to plus sixty degrees Celsius.

Precautionary measures

We remind you of the need to use protective equipment when working with primer

Features of applying AK-070

Before applying the composition, the surface to be treated must be degreased and cleaned of oxides, dirt and dust. In this case, it is recommended to adhere to the following algorithm:

  • cleaning from formation rust
  • removing traces of old coating
  • cleaning with a special remover
  • cleaning the oxidized layer with a wire brush
  • degreasing with a solvent or rag.

It is recommended to store the primer in a dark room at a temperature not exceeding 30C. Its shelf life is no more than six months from the date of manufacture.

Preparation and application work

A new product is easier to prepare than an old one. It is in the latter case that you will have to thoroughly clean it from rust, old paint, and other paintwork with chips and crumbs. The easiest way is to clean off all dirt with a hard iron spatula, but if there is a large surface, sandblasting and shot blasting are usually used. At home, direct manual sanding is used with sandpaper, a mesh, or a drill attachment. At the end of the work there should not be left:

  • dirt, dust;
  • grease, paint;
  • scale;
  • moisture.

The AK-070 primer is mixed, it is ready even without dilution, and solvents are used only when the viscosity increases. After cleaning the surface, all work should be carried out no later than 6 hours later.
Apply the product using a brush or spray in 1-2 layers. Dry the product at a temperature of about 20 degrees for 30 minutes. With this treatment, the service life of the coating will be: in a temperate climate - 5 years, in a cold climate - 4 years, in the tropics - up to 2 years.

Surface preparation and primer application

Instructions for preparing the base are quite common for primers for metal.

We will present the most complex algorithm of actions - for steel covered with rust and remnants of the old paintwork.

  1. Plate rust is removed from the surface. This job is easiest to do with a stiff steel spatula.

However: in production conditions, sand and shot blasting units are used, depending on the thickness of the metal. They ensure that the surface is completely ready for priming and painting.

  1. Remains of old paint can be cleaned off in several ways:
  • For manual abrasive cleaning, sandpaper or sanding mesh can be used; It is more convenient, however, to use a grinder or an appropriate drill attachment.
  • The work will be greatly speeded up when using a wash. It is applied to the painted metal surface, after which it is covered with polyethylene. After 20-30 minutes, the softened coating is removed with a spatula.

Painted surface after applying a remover.

  • Instead of a remover, you can use a hair dryer, gas torch or blowtorch to soften the paintwork. The heated paint is again removed with a spatula.
  1. A metal brush is used to clean the thin corroded layer. As an option, you can apply a rust converter to the steel base, which chemically transforms it into a durable, insoluble coating.
  2. The last step in preparation for priming is degreasing. It is done manually, with a clean rag and a solvent (acetone, turpentine, gasoline, etc.).

Degreasing is done manually with a dry, clean cloth.

  1. The primer is applied in one or two layers using a brush or spray. No more than six hours should pass from the end of cleaning the surface to applying the primer: steel with the film of oxides removed is very quickly covered with a new layer of rust.
