Painting furniture made of MDF: what you can paint it with, how to paint it correctly

Paint for MDF furniture. You want to change the design, but the question arises whether it is possible to paint MDF furniture in a different color at home.

Medium-density fiberboard, or MDF, is used to make furniture that can be seen in many residential interiors. If you want to change something in the design, the question arises whether it is possible to paint MDF furniture a different color at home.

What is MDF

First, it’s worth understanding what MDF is.
Translated from English, the abbreviation “MDF” translates as “medium density fiberboard.” This material is made from wood fibers. MDF production includes the following stages:

  • Sawdust is crushed to a powder state. To do this, the raw materials are brought to 100 degrees temperature and 80 percent humidity. And then it is ground in a defibrator.
  • Then urea-formaldehyde resins and paraffin are added to the powder. The mass is thoroughly mixed and dried at a temperature of 200 degrees. By the way, the mixture dries within a few seconds.
  • The resulting mass is transferred to a hopper and compacted, and then rolled out with a roller along a conveyor. This creates a slab.
  • It is fed to the press, and under a pressure of 350 MPa and when heated to 230 degrees, the pressing stage goes through. After this, the pressure decreases three times and the process of adjusting the thickness of the plate takes place without high temperatures.
  • The cooled slab is sanded and cut into pieces of the required size.

If you cannot find special paint for MDF, you can use painting compounds for windows and doors, or for wood.
Fiberboard is one of the most commonly used materials in the furniture industry. And this is no coincidence. MDF has enough advantages:

  • Moisture resistance;
  • Strength;
  • Availability;
  • Long service life;
  • Possibility of creating various reliefs and decor;
  • Resistance to temperature changes;
  • Wide range of applications.

You can paint the furniture yourself.
Often, happy owners of MDF furniture believe that it is impossible to repaint such interior items with their own hands. But in vain. Everything is much simpler than it might seem at first glance. The main thing is to choose the right paints, namely:

  • Primer compositions;
  • Paints with high hiding power and wear resistance;
  • Varnishes or polishing kits.

With a wide range of colors to choose from, you are sure to find something that suits you.
By painting MDF surfaces, you will refresh the interior, extend the service life of products and significantly improve performance. The latter is especially true if you decide to update the furniture in the bathroom or kitchen.

Choose quality paint manufacturers.

However, there are also disadvantages to coloring. Firstly, it will cost you much more than covering the facades with decorative film. And, secondly, painted surfaces fade over time.

Types of varnishes suitable for MDF

Varnishing furniture made from MDF greatly increases its service life. The following varnishes are used:

  1. Alcohol or oil based. They dry quickly and are inexpensive, and oil-based ones give the surface additional moisture resistance.
  2. Alkyd-urea compositions of two components, which are mixed before starting work. Gives the surface strength and shine.
  3. Epoxy varnishes also consist of two components. They withstand contact with water well, so they are often used for application on countertops.
  4. Polyester compounds. Resistant to high temperatures and chemicals.
  5. Nitrocellulose. They are not durable, so they polish well.
  6. Acrylic-urethane and acrylic. They are diluted with water and do not have a strong odor. Surfaces coated with them are safe for health, allowing contact with food.
  7. Polyurethane. Used in places where increased wear resistance is required.

Applying varnish to furniture parts is a more complex process than painting.

How to paint furniture

Special furniture paints are used for painting. These are non-toxic acrylic-based compounds that are highly breathable and do not smell.

Painting wooden furniture is an easy, quick way to update and refresh the look of a room.

Alkyd paints are created on the basis of organic solvents and are optimally suited for “wet” rooms - bathroom, shower, kitchen. Oil based ones take a relatively long time to dry and have a smell. When buying paints, select a suitable primer for it - this way the composition will stick better.

Primer before painting requires careful selection of the composition for each type of surface.

When choosing a shade, sometimes they use samplers - the lighting in the room gives different shades for the same paint. Matte options absorb light and are optimal for Provence, country, and classic styles.

Such paints give the faded surface of furniture the appearance of having just rolled off the assembly line.

Gloss reflects light - white here is very bright, this is the best option for minimalism, hi-tech, Scandinavian style. Light colors are warm, with the addition of yellow, orange, brown, and cold - with green, blue, purple tints.

Primer

To paint wooden furniture you will need a special primer. The coating ensures reliable adhesion of the paint to the surface and has antiseptic properties. Compositions of a similar shade and from the same manufacturer are best in contact with each other. Due to differences in binding components in primer and paint from different companies, the strength of the coating is reduced.

Advantages and disadvantages

if you want to change the color of the product again, the surface is already ready for use;

easy to apply;

no need to dilute.

does not hide surface defects;

not resistant to damage.

Water-based soil will not withstand wet cleaning.

Stains, varnishes, waxes

Types of varnishes that can be used for furniture:

  • water;
  • nitro varnish;
  • shellac;
  • polyurethane.

Advantages and disadvantages

Durable coating is resistant to damage.

compositions must be diluted with solvents;

unpleasant smell.

Nitro varnish lasts longer on wooden decorations. Shellac creates an ideal glossy surface. Tinting varnish will make light wood several shades darker. Wax protects the surface, adds shine and tint. Special tinting and transparent impregnations emphasize the structure of wood or imitate expensive species on wooden surfaces. The most durable is ship varnish.

But it cannot be used indoors or on furniture due to the toxic substances it contains, which continue to evaporate for many years after application.

Paints

The following compositions are suitable for painting old furniture:

  • water-based acrylic - allow air to pass through, preventing the appearance of fungus, do not smell;
  • alkyd - resistant to moisture, suitable for bathroom furniture;
  • oil ones are the most durable.

Advantages and disadvantages

several layers hide small surface defects;

most formulations are safe for health;

various application methods - roller, brush, spray gun;

wide selection of colors;

white compositions can be colored in any shade.

color may change under natural and artificial light.

To highlight decorations, you can use spray paints in metallic shades.

When choosing white paint, you need to pay attention to its shade. It comes in warm and cold tones. Red, orange and yellow pigments are added to warm tones, and blue and green to cool tones. You should also consider lighting, as white tones look different in a dark and light room. For example, white with a purple tint appears pink.

Repair in practice: how to repaint laminated furniture

Inexpensive shelving and cabinets made of laminated chipboard and MDF were conceived as items that can be easily replaced with analogues of a different size, shape and color. But now you can easily repaint such furniture - we are sharing the most common recommendations for updating the color.

Remove grease and dirt

All dirt must be washed off the surface of laminated furniture and degreased. Use grease-dissolving detergents, rinse and wipe the laminate flooring thoroughly, and dry it with a cloth.

If there are a lot of drawers and trim in a rack or cabinet, it is better to disassemble it. If the shape of the furniture is very simple and you want to paint, for example, only the facades, you can leave the cabinet “as is.”

Create a rough surface

The coating on modern laminated chipboard and MDF is made of PVC and therefore, like any plastic, is poorly wetted even with water, not to mention paint. For better adhesion (adhesion of the paint layer to the laminate layer), you need to treat the surface with the finest sandpaper (“zero”). It is best to work in a respirator - dust from the laminate layer is very harmful.

Prime

Look for a primer that sticks to everything, even glass and tiles: almost all manufacturers of modern paints and varnishes already produce such primers (usually they are polyurethane-based). The cost of such a primer is quite high, but you shouldn’t skimp on it - its quality may be even more important than the quality of the paint.

Important:

At this stage of the work, carefully cover all un-removed fittings with masking tape!

Seal the cracks

There are two recommended ways to fill dents and scratches: either using latex putty or using epoxy-based compounds (there are even tips for using gelcoat).

In any case, after puttying, it is necessary to prime and dry the surfaces again.

Paint: which one to choose and how to apply it

Alkyd enamels and polyurethane paints are suitable for repainting over PVC film - it is best to buy a special paint and varnish material marked “for furniture”. There are many reports about home repainting of MDF and laminated chipboard with acrylic latex compounds - provided that a special primer is used.

Treat corners and hard-to-reach nooks and crannies with a brush with a beveled edge.

A professional approach is painting using a spray gun with paint consumption from 60 to 200 grams per square meter. The nozzle diameter and pressure will have to be calculated independently, taking into account the type of paint.

Required additional materials

Many families to this day keep cabinets with chairs passed down from the older generation, dating back to Soviet times, made so conscientiously that they are still able to perform their task normally. But they have one significant drawback - external “shabbyness”. In order to correct this annoying misunderstanding and finally update the appearance of the furniture, we suggest painting it yourself.

Tools and materials needed for painting furniture

In order for painting furniture with your own hands to be successful, you will first need:

  • a product in need of updating;
  • sufficient amount of paint;
  • tape for painting;
  • brushes;
  • shallow container.

This is by no means a complete list. Before you start working directly, you need to treat the surface on which the paint layer will be applied.

Materials that will be useful in the process:

  • putty;
  • face protection (mask or goggles);
  • a sufficient amount of sandpaper;
  • wooden beam.

Painting outbuildings made of MDF

It was previously said that using MDF for external cladding is not recommended, because under the influence of moisture, it will swell and collapse. However, the slabs can be used as temporary finishing or for country house extensions.

To increase the life of the panels, paint the outside. Important: do not skip the priming step so that after painting the surface retains its properties for a long time. When purchasing a primer, read the label, it is important that it matches the chosen type of paint. Primer is necessary to reduce the use of expensive paint by preventing stains that appear at the base.

  1. Prepare the required amount of paint.
  2. Clean the panel from dust.
  3. Prepare your tools.
  4. Wet the tool in paint and paint the surface.
  5. Be sure to paint the areas where the slabs touch each other.
  6. Wait until the paint dries and if one layer is not enough, then apply an additional one.

Paint selection

Before you paint your furniture, you need to decide what paint to paint your furniture with. Here you will see a wide range of paints in all their color diversity. Don’t rush to buy the first jar you come across: the choice should be made based on knowledge of the properties of the material from which your product is made. This way the paint will last longer, maintaining its original freshness.

Acrylic varnish has no pungent odor, suitable for exterior and interior use

Specialized types of varnish for painting surfaces are suitable. Unlike some types of paints, it will give the furniture an attractive appearance and protect it from adverse factors: humidity, parasites, etc.

Alcohol varnish is used for restoration of antique interior items

If you haven’t had to deal with choosing paint before, here is a list of common manufacturers on the market.

  • Acrylic paints are a popular option often used in painting work. They have increased stability, short drying time, and are easy to use. These products do not have an “aggressive” odor; they can be diluted with a moderate amount of water, thus distributing the material more economically (enough for subsequent uses).

    Acrylic paints for wood furniture

  • Sprays will help reduce the time spent on coloring. They lie flat and dry quickly.

    When working with a spray can, the paint flies in different directions, so first cover all surrounding objects

  • Enamel paints on a varnish base - give the wooden surface a fresh glossy shine.

    Alkyd paints are inexpensive, but it is better not to use them for painting furniture used in residential areas

Deciding on the color

Painting wooden furniture begins with the design selection process, that is, with the selection of paint. First of all, we decide on the question of how to paint wooden furniture. It depends on the wishes of consumers, taking into account the interior of the room. For example, the surface can be matte or glossy. The paint is selected accordingly.

Furniture items can be painted in a light shade. The use of white is especially fashionable.

Natural wood furniture always emphasizes the structure of the wood. Therefore, you should use varnish. But, besides this, stain is used in parallel with it, and wood impregnation would not be superfluous.

If it is difficult to make a choice, then first remove the old coating. After this, the structure of the material will appear and all defects will be visible. After this, a decision is made to paint the furniture a different color or varnish it.

Acrylic paint

Acrylic water-based paint is especially popular among the population. It dries quite quickly and is suitable for treating any surface. Acrylic paint is also safe for humans and the environment. A special advantage is that such a paint and varnish substance has high fire safety. It prevents the spread of fire.

Acrylic paints have high adhesion, which allows them to be used on surfaces. Furniture can be painted without prior priming. This significantly speeds up the restoration of old interior items. Acrylic paint is white. But, with the help of various dyes, it can be given any shade.

Another advantage of acrylic paint is that it contains antiseptic additives. Such substances provide reliable and high-quality protection of wooden products from fungus and mold, which significantly increases its service life. Some paints have water-repellent characteristics, which allows them to be used for painting structures that are used in rooms with high humidity.

Water-based paints

When it comes to repainting wooden furniture, it is better to opt for water-based paints, which are practically odorless. The advantages of this paint include:

  • Environmentally friendly. The substance is made from natural ingredients.
  • Versatility. Water-based paint can be used on various surfaces.
  • Low cost. They are quite cheap, which allows everyone to use this material.
  • A wide range of. Allows you to choose paint to match the interior of the room.
  • Fast drying. The water-based emulsion dries quite quickly. At the same time, there is no unpleasant odor, which makes it possible to carry out work directly in the living room.

Of course, such paints have some disadvantages. First of all, it is worth noting that the paint coating has low resistance to high humidity. Therefore, paint on this basis is not recommended for painting structures in the kitchen or bathroom. Also, the coating is short-lived.

Latex paint

During the application process, latex water-based paint penetrates into the structure of the product, creating a durable protective film. As a result of painting, a washable coating is created that is easily cleaned with a sponge and various cleaning products. This paint is optimal for treating furniture that is susceptible to negative external factors.

The only drawback of the substance is its instability to low temperatures.

Enamel or clear varnish

Lacquered furniture can be painted with alkyd enamel (solvent based). This paintwork material has a thick consistency. The enamel is tinted in 1000 or more different shades. Apply to the surface with a paint sprayer or brush (roller).

Advantages of enamels:

  • does not cause smudges on a vertical surface;
  • forms a matte or glossy finish;
  • after drying, it creates a durable, hard and moisture-resistant film on the surface.

Minuses:

  • toxic composition, contains solvent;
  • high price.

After the paint has dried, the surface can be varnished. As a rule, acrylic paints and varnishes are used for varnishing furniture painted with acrylic. After alkyd compositions, alkyd varnishes are used. Before using any paint and varnish products, you should read the compatibility recommendations.

The varnished coating can be renewed with nitrocellulose or polyurethane varnish. For the restoration of antique lacquered furniture, shellacs (schellak) are used; such compositions adhere to any surface and are applied using a swab.

Metallic paint

Lacquered furniture can be painted with metallized paintwork materials, for example, hammer paint (with a hammered effect) based on alkyd resins or alkyd enamel, acrylic water dispersion for bronze, silver, gold.

Advantages of using paintwork materials with a metal effect:

  • decorative appearance;
  • ease of use (any type of paint and varnish is applied to a prepared and primed surface);
  • after drying, a durable and moisture-resistant film is formed.

Minuses:

  • high price of coatings;
  • Solvent paints have a toxic composition.

Silicone paint

To repaint furniture, silicone paint is also used, which is made on the basis of silicone and acrylic. Thanks to this composition, the substance has many advantages:

  • resistance to abrasion and high humidity;
  • high elasticity;
  • vapor permeability;
  • antiseptic properties.

Silicone paint allows you to create a high-quality and durable protective coating. It is the optimal solution for painting furniture located in rooms with high humidity.

What paint to paint the cabinet

In order to determine how to paint an old cabinet with your own hands, you need to study the compatibility of the dye with the material from which the furniture is made.

Acrylic-based coatings are the most popular for painting furniture, because... dry quickly, easy to apply, resistant to damage. The paint is diluted with water, which saves materials. The compositions do not have a strong odor and disappear quickly, so they are suitable for decorating children's rooms and kitchens. The material is applied with a brush or roller.

Cabinets made of chipboard and natural wood are painted with alkyd dyes. The material contains coloring pigments, kerosene solvent, and antiseptic additives.

A popular type of paint is in cans. The material is easy to apply and dries quickly. The paint is distributed evenly.

The choice of material is also influenced by the design project, because... the surface can be glossy or matte. For glossy products you will need enamel varnish paint, which adds shine to the surface. Matte shades are obtained after oil treatment. Transparent paints will help preserve the natural structure of wood.

Painting process: step-by-step instructions

Important! – The key to quality painting lies in careful surface preparation.

Preparatory work

To ensure an even coating, the surface must be properly prepared for painting.

Visual inspection

Before work, assess the condition of the piece of furniture. Old chairs, sofas and armchairs often need to be reupholstered. Before painting, you also need to fix wobbly legs and squeaky doors.

Removing old coating

In addition to sandpaper and the sanding attachment of the grinder, varnish is removed from furniture using solvents or heated with a hair dryer, and then cleaned off. But the easiest way to roughen a smooth surface is by sanding it with sandpaper.

Degreasing

After finishing cleaning and polishing the surface of the furniture, they begin to degrease it. It is necessary so that the paint lays on the surface in an even layer. Degreasing will also increase the service life of restored furniture; the paint will last a very long time. The means for this procedure are different. Any detergent will do. Powder, dish soap or soap is diluted in water and the surface is thoroughly cleaned. After this, wipe with a cloth moistened with clean warm water and wipe dry. An alcohol solution will also help degrease the surface of the product, and vinegar will do an excellent job of removing dirt and grease.

Sanding and sanding the surface

In paint and varnish work, home or industrial, proper surface preparation is important. In order for the paint to adhere well to the MDF board in the future (for example, on facades or wall panels), it is necessary to first sand them.

Certain tools are required for grinding:

  • sandpaper;
  • soft abrasive of fine grain;
  • sanding machines for primer.

If the product to be painted is small in size, then use sandpaper on foam rubber in a grade from P220 to P280. To clean large flat surfaces, fine-grained sanding mats of the 700 series are used. The same materials can be used to remove excess soil in the future.

MDF facades are sanded over the entire plane, removing the top layer of varnish. Complex curves in the milling of MDF facades, edges, edges and ends are best cleaned with the same sandpaper.

When sanding, you must follow the technology for removing old varnish, you must not allow the surface to overheat (if you are using a power tool), and you must not allow so-called marks (scratches) to appear on the lamination. The wood-fiber surface, as a rule, is located under a decorative laminated film, so when sanding, you cannot wipe the top layer to holes. The chips are separately cleaned of dirt and the edges are sanded.

After sanding, the surface will become matte and rough. Then the dust is swept away (sucked in with a vacuum cleaner), and the surface of the slab is washed with a solvent. It will remove possible fat deposits, excess moisture, and dirt.

Puttying and priming

Deep cracks, chips and scratches that could not be smoothed out with sandpaper are covered with putty. For durable coating, latex compounds are used that form elastic compounds. As a result, the paint will not crack due to temperature changes.

For metal, an anti-corrosion primer is used, and for previously painted surfaces, deep penetration compounds are used.

Before applying the primer, areas with putty are sanded again. A surface coated with a water-based primer should not be wiped with a damp cloth before painting.

Proper drying

Water-based paint takes quite a long time to dry. It is recommended to prepare in advance the place where the furniture will stand until completely dry. There should be no children, animals, dust or dirt in this room. Each coat of paint must be cured for at least 12 hours. It is optimal to leave chests of drawers, tables, cabinets and other painted interior items for a day until completely dry.

Drying time depends on the type of paint composition. You can read the instructions on the jar. The time and necessary drying conditions are indicated there. It is also important to create the right temperature. It should be approximately 20-25 °C.

If the furniture has a polished surface, even the smallest specks of dust will be visible on it. It is recommended to think in advance about how important such furniture is, or whether it is better to cover it with matte paint.

Technology for painting furniture facades made of MDF

This is not an easy job, requiring painstaking skill, little skill and extreme care. Everything is done in several stages, and the final quality of painting depends on the quality of each of them. If you do not plan to paint the panels yourself, but want to call a specialist, then check the price per m2 in advance. If you do the work yourself, then study the steps in more detail.

Tools

You can use various tools to apply paint. The most basic thing is a brush, roller or spray gun. Everything directly depends on professionalism, budget and personal preferences. Remember that a more optimal result is achieved using a spray gun or spray gun. Using a spray gun you can not only paint, but also prime.

Two types of pistols have been developed: electric and pneumatic. The latter operate on the basis of air, which is pumped by a compressor, and the former from a regular electrical outlet.

If you purchase a brush or roller, then pay attention to the markings, which indicate what composition they should be used for.

The equipment for painting has been selected, now you need to select auxiliary materials. Among them: sanding pad (Scotch-brite), sandpaper of various grain sizes, solvent, markers, masking tape, anti-silicone and degreaser. Do not forget about personal protective equipment: gloves, work clothes and respiratory protection (respirator or cotton-gauze bandage).

How to remove old coating

The topmost layer on MDF is most often a glossy coating (paint or varnish). If it is not removed, the new layer will not be able to take hold. Therefore, the top must be treated with the coarsest sandpaper. It is not necessary to remove all the paint, the main thing is to make the surface rough.

The old coating can also be removed using special removers; if we are talking about acrylic paint, you can use a solvent.

Another option for surface preparation is a paint dryer (torch). It can be used for polyester coating. The varnish cracks under the influence of high temperature, and then it can be easily removed with a chisel or spatula.

Grinding

To obtain a high-quality coating, you need a perfectly smooth surface. To obtain it, you must first grind the surface. Certain sanding steps require sandpaper of varying grits. P220-280 is used to prepare the base for primer, P320 is used to remove uneven ground, and P500 is sanding before applying paint.

For delicate and final sanding, use non-woven felt or Scotch Brite.

Painting

Painting MDF facades is not particularly difficult. When using a spray gun or gun, be sure to protect your respiratory tract. Keep the device at least 15 cm away from the façade. Please note that the movements should go in one direction so that the paint lays evenly.

Tips for coloring various materials

We told you how to paint furniture, what tools and materials to use for this. Let's look at the features of the materials.

Wood particle boards

Repaint the chipboard according to the standard sequence. It is important to prepare the surface correctly: it depends on the coating of the slab. The laminated chipboard is cleaned of paper trim and traces of glue are removed. Lacquered and veneered chipboards are only sanded to improve adhesion.

For chipboards of any type, a layer of primer is required. We recommend alkyd or acrylic paint, you can use oil paint. Apply paint and varnish compositions in loose layers to avoid drips.

Before painting chipboard, it is important to properly prepare

Restoration of polished furniture

Let's move on to specific actions and look at how to repaint furniture or refresh furniture that has lost its shine. How to construct a work correctly in order to give new life to seemingly damaged objects?

Not only furniture items that have a matte surface can be repainted. Let's try to figure out how to paint polished furniture, especially furniture that was made several decades ago.

With dedication and diligence, you can transform an old chest of drawers or chair into a work of art. This is especially true if you plan to decorate the room in vintage or French country style. Here are detailed instructions on how to paint furniture that has a polished surface:

  1. Remove the polished part of the furniture using a special solvent. During the process, the coating begins to delaminate; all that remains is to remove it with a spatula. It is necessary to prepare pieces of furniture for painting carefully so as not to damage the structure of the wood.
  2. You can use a grinding machine if available. This way the work will go much faster.
  3. Next, clean the surface with fine-grained sandpaper and blow off the dust.
  4. After preparation, the furniture is painted in the style that best suits the chosen design.

Natural wood

When working with natural wood, lint may rise and the surface may become rough. To prevent the problem, after the first priming, sand the surface with a sheet of fine-grained sandpaper.

After work, use sandpaper to wipe the surface with a soft microfiber cloth. Make sure that there are no small particles left on the furniture: they will be noticeable after painting.

Wooden furniture can be painted in a bright color or updated the natural tone with stain

Lacquered wood

Before painting varnished wood, you need to remove the old coating from the furniture. This is a labor-intensive process: the varnish must first be softened. To do this, use special washes, a hair dryer, and a grinding machine.

If the paint coating adheres tightly, it can be left. Sand it and prime it, and then apply new paint.

Remove the glossy layer from lacquered furniture before painting.

Don't throw away old furniture: give it a second life. Repaint it, if the color and design are outdated, apply pictures and patterns to refresh its look. Follow the sequence so as not to damage the material.

Decorating a painted surface

There are many ways to decorate an updated wardrobe or sideboard. For this purpose, designers recommend using patterns, ornaments, and contrasting inserts of parts of facades made of wallpaper or fabric. It all depends on the imagination of the master and the availability of certain materials. One rule applies here: the combination must be harmonious.

An interesting way to decorate a closet is by painting. It is generally accepted that only a professional artist can apply a pattern to a cabinet, but even an inexperienced craftsman can make simple drawings.

Wardrobe with paintings

A good way to decorate a cabinet door is to use a stencil. It’s easy to make it yourself or buy it ready-made in a specialized store. Some people use masking tape: stick the strips in the desired order, apply paint, and then remove the tape. It turns out to be quite an interesting and unusual drawing.

Many owners of old furniture dream of giving it an antique look. For this purpose, you can coat the product with chalky or matte paint, and then create abrasions near the fittings and in the corners with sandpaper.

Old chests of drawers or sideboards, which are painted in some places with brown or blue paint and then rubbed with wax, will ideally fit into the Provence style. After this, all that remains is to paint the entire product, and then, when the layer is dry, rub these places with a spatula or knife.

Pieces of furniture with a beautiful textured surface will look impressive if you cover them with two types of stain - first a light water-based stain, and then a dark oil-based one. It is possible to create a patina effect with your own hands even without experience. To do this, the facade is painted with acrylic enamel and allowed to dry. Then in some places the sheets are sanded and polished with a dry cloth. A layer of paint of a darker or lighter shade is applied on top of the product. Selected areas are again treated with sandpaper. The final touch is applying a double layer of acrylic varnish.

You can coat not only furniture with a pattern or pattern with a transparent composition. This product will give the product a glossy shine, thanks to which it will look attractive and retain its newfound appearance for a long time. The varnish dries for at least 12 hours. After this, you can assemble the old wardrobe, sideboard or chest of drawers and enjoy the result of your work.

I hope that the presented methods for processing chipboard will help you rejuvenate old furniture and save your family budget. The following video will make it easier to understand the above.

Lace ornament

There is nothing better than lace for romantic and elegant interiors. But did you know that they can also be used as ornaments on furniture? This is an interesting version of the stencil technique. You will need a lace napkin or unnecessary tulle (after such creativity, you will have to throw them away). You paint the item a base color, then secure the piece of lace with tape so it doesn’t move accidentally, and spray paint over it from a can. Remove the fabric and the pattern is ready. Instead of spraying, you can try painting with a sponge, but the result will be more blurry. The lace pattern looks great on chests of drawers, cabinets, chair seats and various tabletops.

Common mistakes

Among the most common mistakes during restoration, it is worth highlighting:

  1. Discoloration and bleed-through. They can occur due to poor cleaning of the surface from dust and greasy stains. Before you start work, you need to study the painting technology in order to know how to carry it out correctly and strictly adhere to all recommendations. To correct the error, you must identify the source of contamination and remove it. And before repainting, you should always treat the surfaces with a special layer of primer;
  2. Cracking of painted layers on the outside. The reason for this defect may be the following: the previous layer of paint is too thick, the coloring composition has lost its elasticity and is now unable to either shrink or expand on top of the substrate. A small area can be scraped off, sanded, and painted again. The larger one will have to be cleaned of the coating using a hair dryer and a spatula, primed and repainted again;
  3. Unpainted areas. This happens because the surface was not properly degreased before painting. It has waxy or oily areas. The coloring composition cannot apply evenly, leaving unpainted areas and spots. Allow the painted surface to dry completely. Sand with sandpaper, wash with soap and water or any detergent, and dry;
  4. Formation of smudges on a freshly repainted surface. This is a consequence of uneven application of the coloring composition over a wide area or too much dilution with a solvent. The defect can be corrected by sanding the paint with warm soapy water after it has completely dried. Apply the coloring composition again, washing the surface again with warm water and soap, then dry it;
  5. Freshly applied paint wrinkled. This happens because the top layer dries faster than the bottom layer. Especially large wrinkling occurs on a thick layer;
  6. Freshly painted furniture takes a very long time to dry. This is most likely caused by improper preliminary preparation or an overly contaminated surface. Water-based paint can take a long time to dry because it is applied in damp or too cold conditions.

Old and worn furniture can sparkle with new colors, becoming the highlight of the interior. You just need to turn on your own imagination, add a creative approach, and in a few hours change it radically. Any decoration technology is appropriate here, the main thing is to use high-quality materials, take your time, and do not treat the work negligently, so as not to correct your own mistakes later.

Cabinet Painting Tools

To paint a cabinet yourself, you need to assemble a set of tools. You will need sheets of sandpaper, spatulas, a grinder, primer, putty, solvents, masking tape, a paint tray, glue, and a hair dryer.

Painting is done with brushes - narrow or wide, rollers - velor or foam rubber. A spray bottle or electric spray gun will help to apply the layer evenly. The equipment is used to process large surfaces.

For work you will need protective equipment: special clothing, glasses and gloves, as well as auxiliary materials: soft rags, sponges.

Practical tips

You can add uniqueness to absolutely any furniture.

  1. It is better to paint the cabinet outside or in a well-ventilated area. Place all necessary tools and materials near the work site. All fittings from the cabinet should be removed.
  2. The enamel should have a liquid consistency. If the paint has thickened, it must be thinned.
  3. When you decide to change the color of your cabinet, remember that the first coat of paint applied will be a lighter shade. Therefore, if after applying the first layer you notice that the furniture has become lighter than you would like, do not rush to draw conclusions.
  4. A thick layer of paint gives a more saturated color. This, by the way, is also true for white paint. Several layers will give an excellent snow-white result.
  5. Painting tape will help prevent paint from staining individual cabinet elements.

White furniture in the interior is an unusual and stylish solution. You can change the color of the cabinet to white, or, conversely, make it unusually bright and non-standard yourself. This will require minimal time and effort.
