Properties, advantages and recommendations for applying paint BT-177

Purpose of the material

Silver enamel BT-177 is a suspension in consistency and includes bitumen-based varnish and aluminum powder. It is best to work with silver on metal - the paint helps prevent rust from appearing on the surface. The product can also be applied to products made from other materials - wood, plastic, concrete.

The product is widely used for external and internal work. It has excellent fire-resistant properties, therefore it is used for coating furnaces, boilers, and other products and structures made of ferrous and non-ferrous metals that have to be operated at elevated temperatures. Due to the presence of aluminum, paint cannot be used in children's rooms, hospitals and other premises that have high safety requirements.

Material used for painting:

  • country equipment;
  • car rims;
  • pipes;
  • gate;
  • profile fences;
  • columns

Do not use the product when surfaces are heated above +90 degrees. Not used for painting water storage containers, not applied to oil, oil-bitumen, alkyd coatings, or nitro enamels.

Correct painting technology

Each package containing BT varnish or aluminum powder, as well as ready-made mixtures, contains instructions for use and a brief description of the product. If such information is not available, when painting with silver, you must adhere to several basic rules:

  • The surface to be painted must be completely free of previous paints;
  • Rust needs to be removed;
  • All defects must be treated with a primer.

The paint is applied in one layer until completely dry (you can use either a brush or a special roller if you need to work with large areas). The first layer, at an average temperature of 24-27 degrees, dries in about a day; if necessary, paint can be applied in several layers.

To speed up the drying process of the coating, you can use household fan heaters. The paint itself has a specific unpleasant odor, so when carrying out interior work, you need to take into account that as it dries, the windows in the room should be open.

The composition, already diluted and dried after use, can be reused, having previously been brought to the desired consistency using Solvent (solvent).

Benefits of paint

Previously, silver was produced in one color, corresponding to the name. Other shades are now being produced: gold, bronze, copper paint is on sale, and additional dyes are added to them. Thanks to this variety, the product gives excellent decorative qualities to products, and the appearance of surfaces is significantly improved.

Other advantages of the material:

  • protection from damaging factors, including natural ones;
  • resistance to weather changes;
  • protection against corrosion, stopping an existing process;
  • quick drying;
  • long service life.

The water-repellent properties of the material after painting the products make it possible to simplify their care. Silver does not react to washing with SMS, abrasives, or cleaning agents; it does not crack or crumble during friction. The paint will retain its excellent appearance for 3 years after application, after which the surface must be tinted.

Recommendations for storage and transportation

The shelf life of aluminum powder is 12 months, but bitumen varnish is stored half as long - only six months. Therefore, manufacturers indicate this particular period as a warranty period.

The material can be transported in a covered vehicle in a temperature range from -30 to +30° Celsius.

If the product was frozen during transportation, it should be placed in a room at room temperature for 24 hours.

Properties and characteristics

The product is prepared in accordance with GOST 5631-79. Each batch undergoes a certification procedure and receives the necessary certificates of conformity and quality certificates. The certificate indicates the percentage of components. The paint has a peculiarity - the composition is prepared immediately before bottling from aluminum powder (15 - 20%) and bitumen varnish (80 - 85%) and is sold in the form of two components (powder and varnish separately). In production, fine powder PAP-2 or larger powder PAP-1 is used.

Specifications:

  • the appearance of the coating is smooth, semi-glossy, without craters, sagging, defects, silver or another color;
  • viscosity according to the instrument viscometer VZ-4 - 18 - 35 s;
  • dry residue share - 40%;
  • temperature for application +5…+35 degrees;
  • consumption per 1 m2 - 80 - 130 g/sq. m;
  • layer thickness - 20 - 25 microns;
  • bending elasticity - 1 mm;
  • film coverage - 30 g/sq. m;
  • Drying time for the film at a temperature of +20 degrees is 16 hours, at a temperature of +100 degrees - 30 minutes.

It is better to apply a primer before using the product, but a direct method of painting without a primer is possible. For dilution, turpentine, white spirit, and solvent are used.

Composition and consumption of paint

BT paint is a two-component mixture that is prepared immediately before use. Silver powder and BT varnish are mixed in an approximate ratio of 1:4. Viscosity is determined individually and depends on the coating to be painted. The composition may include aluminum powder shavings of different grinding fractions (PAP1 or PAP2).

At specialized points of sale you can purchase ready-made silverware, which before opening the jar is thoroughly shaken for 4-5 minutes so that all the settled components are thoroughly mixed together. It can also be called primer in cans.

Also, in order to bring silver paint BT 177 to the desired consistency, oil-alcohol solvents (white spirit and analogues) can be used.

Paint consumption BT 177 per m² depends on several factors:

  • Texture of the material being painted (when painting wooden, porous plastic and concrete surfaces, the consumption is always 2 times greater than when painting smooth metal products);
  • Solvents and consistency used;
  • Painter's skills.

The average consumption when painting smooth, properly treated surfaces is about 120-135 grams of coloring composition per m2.

Surface preparation

Before applying the material, it is important to properly prepare the surface of the product. Metal surfaces should be cleaned of enamels and other old coatings; special removers can be used for this. Next, the base is puttied and primed, if necessary.

Before painting, remove any remaining scale, rust, any dirt, oil stains, or grease from the surface. To clean the base, you can use sandpaper, sandblasting machines and other methods.

Areas of application of BT-577

  • The use of bitumen varnish is justified in construction, industrial areas, everyday life, and agriculture.
  • It is used to process operating devices and equipment. And also for items that are subject to transportation or short-term storage for up to six months.
  • Varnish is often used to open agricultural equipment that is subject to off-season conservation.
  • BT-577 is usually used to process metal and wood surfaces.
  • You can use it to protect slate, brick, and other materials.
  • To prevent rotting, the composition is applied to wooden posts and crowns of houses.

Process Details

Preparatory work for the surface

Before applying the paint and varnish composition, you must first properly prepare the surface of the products, and metal products should be cleaned of enamels and other old coating layers, and for this it would be reasonable to use special removers. Next, the base should be puttied and primed, if necessary. Before painting, any remaining scale, rust, other contaminants, grease and oil stains should be removed from the surface. To clean the base, it is allowed to use sandpaper, sandblasting machines and other methods.

Mode of application

To use the paint, you will first need to thoroughly stir the composition. Next, check the working viscosity and, if necessary, add solvents (it is best to dilute thickened paint with a solvent). The amount of solvent should not be more than a 1 to 1 ratio by weight. Before application, make sure the surface is perfectly dry. Pneumatic spray, brush or roller application methods are also used. The number of layers should be from 1 to 2, no more. It is also important to take into account the recommended temperature level, and the humidity should be no more. Than 80%. The temperature of the base itself should be no more than +16 degrees.

Please note that the surface must be dried for at least 15 hours, and only after this the product can be used. If possible, heat dry for ½ hour, and then leave the coating at room temperature for another 3 hours and you're done!

Transportation and storage

The guaranteed shelf life will be 6 months (powder can be stored longer - up to 1 year, and bitumen varnish separately - only 6 months). Transportation is carried out at temperatures from -30 degrees to +30 on covered transport, but please note that after freezing the product must thaw within 24 hours at room temperature and the process cannot be accelerated with a hairdryer or heaters!

Safety regulations

Serebryanka is not dangerous in terms of explosions, but it is fire hazardous, since it contains a flammable component. When storing it, it should be located away from sources of heat, fire, sunlight, and the container should be tightly closed. While working, you should wear rubber gloves and protect your respiratory tract with a respirator. Work indoors is carried out only with good ventilation. The room should be ventilated after finishing work.

Aluminum can cause cancer and chronic diseases, so paint should not be allowed to come into contact with dishes or food. Residues of material must not be buried, thrown away with household waste, or poured down the drain: they are disposed of in accordance with the rules for the removal of construction waste.

Precautionary measures

Due to the fact that a solvent is used in the preparation of silverware, painting near sources of open fire is prohibited. This could lead to a fire during the work shift.

It is recommended to carry out the procedure in well-ventilated areas, wearing personal protective equipment (respirator, gloves and mask). If the paint comes into contact with the skin, the latter must be washed immediately. If necessary, the dermis must be treated with white spirit.

It is prohibited to use silver to color dishes. This product contains aluminum, which when ingested by the human body causes chronic diseases. Remaining enamel should not be thrown away. Silver must be disposed of as construction waste.

How much paint does it take to make one layer?

According to the technical characteristics of BT-177 paint, the parameter of one layer has a thickness of 20-25 micrometers at a consumption of 110-130 grams per square meter. However, the consumption of any applied composition depends on the method used for painting (spray or manual application), as well as on the professionalism and skills of the specialist. The texture of the material being painted directly affects consumption. When painting wooden, porous plastic or concrete surfaces, the consumption definitely increases by at least 1.5 times than the consumption of silver BT 177 for metal. In addition, depending on the manufacturer, paint consumption may be different. This depends on those components that can be additionally used in the composition of silverware. To accurately determine the required volume, you need to study the instructions for a specific product.

How to dry a painted product

There are two schemes for drying products depending on the temperature of exposure to the surface. At a temperature of 20-22 degrees - 16 hours and at 100-110 degrees - 3 hours. If in the first case the varnish BT 177 dries in natural, domestic conditions, then when exposed to artificial heat, certain requirements must be observed. Before using hot drying, keep for half an hour at 22 degrees. Before use, the product must also be exposed to 18-22 degrees for 3 hours.
