Advantages and disadvantages
Before you start choosing slats, study the pros and cons:

Lining
This facing material has long been well known to almost everyone. It is a wide panel, the thickness of which is 12-20 mm (depending on the purpose). The tongue-and-groove fastening system allows you to easily, reliably and hermetically connect parts of the cladding together.
The main advantages of lining include environmental friendliness, thermal insulation properties, aesthetic appearance, ease of installation and reasonable cost.
Which slats are best to choose?
Before installing wooden slats on the wall in the interior, you need to choose the material from which they will be made.
- Pine is the most inexpensive and affordable wood. It is rarely attacked by fungus or damaged by insects. However, you will have to tinker with the preparation: pine requires impregnation from moisture and treatment with alkali before applying varnish.
- Beech is more expensive, but stronger than pine. The disadvantage is the possibility of rotting, so it requires treatment with a special compound.
- Oak is a durable and strong, but at the same time expensive, elite species. Solid oak is resistant to moisture, insects and mold, so surface treatment will be sufficient.
- MDF with veneer is a durable and non-deforming alternative. Due to the glue in the composition, this material is not the most environmentally friendly. In addition, even veneered MDF differs in appearance from natural wood.
- Metal is the most durable option of all. It is more expensive than wood and is less common. Can be of any color, including imitation wood structure. Gray painted lamellas look great in an interior in the style of minimalism and hi-tech, black - in a loft, white - in Scandi, colored - in modern or Provence.
The bars can be of any width and thickness. The section size is selected based on the purpose and size of the room: the smaller the room, the thinner the boards should be and vice versa.
Advice: spliced wooden buffels practically do not deform, and in terms of environmental friendliness and beauty they are not inferior to solid ones.
Rules for choosing wood material for wall decoration
The choice of finishing materials for interior wooden walls is influenced by the conditions in which the wood will be used. Pine does not have high moisture resistance, so the product cannot be used for wall decoration in damp rooms.
Spruce trees respond well to water, and deciduous trees have the highest moisture resistance and strength. Their prices are correspondingly much higher. Dimensions are also taken into account - products are selected based on the shape of the room.
Before purchasing, it is recommended to inspect the panels for damage and bends. Installation of curved elements provokes the disconnection of fasteners and combs, as well as the formation of cracks on them. This will significantly degrade the integrity of the cladding.
When choosing a block house or lining, pay attention to their grade. Products of class A and Extra are characterized by a high-quality polished surface that does not form chips or areas of different shades. Products of class C and B, which have many defects, are more suitable for facade decoration of walls with wood inside the house.

Use Cases
There are many options for using wooden slats: to make an accent, decorate a ceiling, zone a spacious room, fence a staircase.
Wall decoration with decorative slats
In the living room, wall slats are mounted behind the sofa or opposite it; in the bedroom they can serve as a headboard, and in the kitchen they can highlight the dining area.
Decorative slats are installed in two ways: with glue or with a frame. The first option is suitable if the panel is used as decoration and furniture and appliances will not be mounted on it. Step-by-step instruction:
- Treat the wall with a mold anti-mold primer and apply a decorative coating.
- Cut the boards 1 cm smaller than the desired size to allow the wood to expand freely.
- Cover the slats with a protective compound, paint or stain.
- Apply glue to the slats and attach.

If you plan to hang a TV, heavy paintings or furniture on a slatted composition, attach them to the frame:
- Treat the wall with a mold anti-mold primer and apply a decorative coating.
- Assemble the sheathing from the bars and treat it with a protective compound.
- Saw the bars to size and process them.
- Attach the buffels to the sheathing with screws or nails.
- Paint or stain the finished structure.

Ceiling decoration with slats
Decorating the ceiling with baffles allows you to hide unevenness, hide wiring and simplify the installation of lamps. In addition, such an original finish changes the geometry of the room. If you place boards crosswise in a narrow room, it will become wider.
The installation procedure for the ceiling is the same as described above: surface and wood processing, installation of sheathing, fastening of the slats themselves.
Zoning a room with slats
Wooden partitions are ideal for zoning through space: they allow light to pass through, while separating one part of the room from another. With the help of decorative slats, you can separate the kitchen and dining room, highlight an office or bedroom in the studio, and separate the bathtub and toilet.

Other possible options
Mahogany is important for creating a rich and stylish Provence design. It looks beautiful with brick and stone. Gray material is rare; it adds monochrome and tranquility to the interior.

What do they look like in the interior?
Many completed projects show that buffels are an excellent solution for decorating apartments and houses. We have selected options for decorating the walls with slats and photos of these interiors.
Reiki in the living room interior
In the interior of the living room, slats are installed on the wall or used for zoning.
Shelves, paintings, flower pots are attached to the sheathed wall behind the sofa or left empty. If it’s opposite the sofa, hang the TV and hide the wires between the slats themselves.

The studio uses kitchen-living room zoning, separating the kitchen and dining areas. Another option is a dedicated space for a bedroom or office in a small apartment.

Reiki in the kitchen interior
The best place for buffels in the kitchen is the dining area. The slatted wall attracts attention and highlights the eating area - be it a dining table or a bar counter. The slats with built-in lighting, extending slightly onto the ceiling, look advantageous.

Another option for using slats in the kitchen interior is the ceiling. With their help, they hide unevenness, wiring and improve the geometry of the room.
Reiki in the bedroom interior
Professional designers love to use boards at the headboard - you can cover the entire wall with them, or you can create a structure along the width of the bed. Both options look stylish.

If you are against classic solutions and forms in the interior, install the buffels asymmetrically, on one side only.
Wooden slats in a children's room
There are many ways to use slats in a nursery. Separate relaxation and work/play areas, arrange a space behind the bed, and decorate the ceiling.

If you place the slats horizontally at the desktop, you can install shelves between them or use them as rails.

For a bathroom, wood must be carefully treated with moisture-proof compounds.
Buffels are used to separate the toilet and shower, visually highlight the sink or decorate the ceiling.
Examples in the interior of a balcony
The simplest, most inexpensive and fastest way to decorate walls on a balcony is with lamellas. You can cover the entire space with them, or you can make an accent.

Hallway design ideas
In the hallway, buffels are not only a beautiful, but also a functional element. Hang them with hooks, a mirror and shelves. This way you get a stylish and inexpensive entrance just steps from the door.
If the hallway is long and narrow, install decorative slats horizontally around or opposite the front door. In other cases, mount vertically.
We are looking for a trick
Of course, it’s hard to argue with a natural wooden frame; it’s certainly beautiful, but frankly speaking, it’s no longer original. And then, the price of such eco-friendly housing is now sky-high.
Interior decoration with clapboard is a good thing, relatively inexpensive, and with the right approach it looks very decent. But there is no “smell” of any “zest” here. For the vast majority of people, the lining is firmly fused with places such as a bathhouse, dacha or loggia.
Wooden wall panels are also not suitable in this case. Firstly, they have clearly fixed dimensions, which significantly limits the designer’s flight of imagination. And secondly, the texture and color scheme of such coatings do not shine with originality and variety of forms. In my opinion, among the serial models, parquet boards look much better in the interior than wall panels.

If you want to show off your originality and extraordinary approach to design, then it is better to leave standard serial cladding alone. This does not mean that they should be completely excluded, but the share of promoted stamps in the created bright fragment should be no more than 30%.
Any instructions will only interfere with the creative process. Therefore, try to forget about stereotypes and taboos. And only then will you have a real opportunity to become a trendsetter in a new, hitherto unknown direction in interior fashion.
