Russia has strict fire safety standards, and fire protection of metal structures stands apart. An experienced designer can easily determine how thick the fire protection should be. To do this, it is enough to refer to SP 2.13130.2012, GOST R 53295-2009, Federal Law No. 384 and the Manual for determining the fire resistance of structures.
But when it comes to choosing specific solutions, it's easy to get lost in the abundance of them. In this article, we looked at 8 popular manufacturers that offer fire protection for metal structures.
The designer has 2 main paths:
- Use constructive fire protection, i.e. block access to the metal by other structures for flames. Cover it with bricks, plaster it, line it with fireproof plasterboard - there are many techniques. They are usually labor intensive, but can provide metal fire protection for up to 3 hours.
- Use a thin layer fire retardant coating. Mainly paints. This method is more practical, less labor-intensive and easy to update compared to the first method. Hence its great popularity.
The purpose of the article: to help designers and contractors choose a fire protection method, tell about the main manufacturers, and compare the products they offer.
What regulatory documents should you refer to?
The database of domestic standards contains quite a lot of documents that are in one way or another related to fire safety requirements. Where should a designer start? We suggest following this sequence.
1. SP 2.13130.2012 “Fire protection systems. Ensuring the fire resistance of protected objects . You will need this document to determine the fire resistance level of the building. It depends on the purpose of the building, the number of storeys, the presence of hazardous technological processes, etc. There are 5 degrees in total: they are designated by Roman numerals from I to V. The higher this parameter, the more stringent the requirements for the structural elements of the building.
2. Table 21 Federal Law “Technical Regulations on Fire Safety Requirements” . Here you will find the required fire resistance limits for the main structural elements - columns, floors, trusses, etc. For example, REI90 - the structure must not lose load-bearing capacity (R), integrity (E) and thermal insulation capacity (I) within 90 minutes after the start of the fire.
3. Clause II.1 Guidelines for determining the fire resistance of structures . We determine the actual fire resistance limit of the structure. To do this, we calculate the reduced metal thickness (RMT): there is an example of calculation in the Manual on page 6. Next we go to Table 6 and select the value of the actual limit depending on the PTM.
4. We compare the values of the required fire resistance limit (point 2) and the actual one (point 3). If the actual fire resistance limit is less than the required one, the structure requires fire protection.
5. Clause 5.5.3 GOST R 53295-2009. Fire protection means for steel structures . This indicates which fire retardant efficiency group the fire protection product should have. Using this parameter, you will determine the consumption of fire protection per unit surface: the manufacturer indicates this information in the technological regulations for the product.
In practice, metal almost always needs fire protection. An exception may be profiles with a powerful section with thick walls: they have the highest PTM value among all profiles. Or if the building has a fire resistance degree of V: in this case, the degree of fire resistance of its structures is unimportant.
Types of fire protection for metal structures
Before we compare manufacturers' products, let's look at the characteristics of the main types of fire protection.
Features of the use of structural fire protection
Comparison criterion | Option | Note |
Cladding type | Brick or concrete lining | A relatively cheap way to protect metal. Used if it is necessary to strengthen the structure. Provides fire resistance up to 3 hours. Otherwise, it slows down the speed of construction and significantly increases the load on the metal. Not suitable for complex structural shapes. Labor-intensive to restore and repair. |
Plaster cladding | A more practical method compared to brick and concrete. Less load on the structure. Provides fire resistance up to 3 hours. Low moisture resistance. High labor intensity when applied to structures of complex shape.
Cladding with slabs, screens, sheets | High maintainability. The ability to achieve a fire resistance limit of up to 3 hours. Installation is possible only on simple metal structures. Low moisture resistance. |
Features of the use of fire retardant paints
Comparison criterion | Option | Note |
The basis | Water | Easy to apply to prepared surface. It is possible to use spray equipment. Forms a smooth, matte finish. More environmentally friendly when applied compared to organic-based paints. Minus - cannot be applied at temperatures below +5°C. |
Organic | The main advantage is the ability to apply paint at temperatures as low as -20°C. Any method of application. Higher durability and moisture resistance of the coating. More expensive than water-based paints.
Operating principle | Intumescent | They effectively counteract high temperatures by increasing the thickness of the coating up to 40-70 times: the reaction takes place with the release of inert gases and absorption of heat. A layer of highly porous foam coke is formed, which insulates structures from thermal effects for up to 2 hours. |
Anti-intumescent | Forms a durable thermal insulation film. It is mainly made on the basis of liquid glass. Withstands high temperatures, but is inferior to intumescent paints in terms of action time - up to 1.5 hours. |
For comparison, 7 fire protection manufacturers were selected.
We give prices per 1 kg of goods, and not per unit of metal surface. This is due to the fact that costs depend on the required fire resistance limit of the structure and the PTM. The higher the limit and the lower the PTM, the more fire protection is consumed. Manufacturers of fire protection products

The advantage of paint fire protection
The advantage of paint fire protection is, first of all, that a thin-film coating is formed on the surface of the metal structure, which, unlike various linings and coatings, does not clutter up the useful surrounding space, and also serves a dual purpose - in addition to its main function, it has corrosion-protective properties.

Advantages and disadvantages of fire retardant paints with different types of binders
Thermal-expanding paints and varnishes are solvent-free (based on resins or oligomers), water-soluble and soluble in organic thinners or solvents (white spirit, solvent, toluene, xylene, butyl acetate).
Water-soluble compositions are non-toxic, technologically advanced and form coatings with fire resistance of up to 120-150 minutes. They are effective in fires of the “cellulose type”, but in fires of the “carbon type”, with a rapid increase in temperature, they do not have time to turn into a protective layer and are destroyed.
Water-soluble fire-retardant paints are suitable for indoor use - at low temperatures and high humidity they are prone to embrittlement and peeling; their developed microporosity leads to the gradual leaching of foaming additives.
Protective coatings based on organic solvents are more effective against carbon-type fires, can last a long time in any weather and humidity, and do not cause corrosion of metal surfaces.
The highest performance characteristics are distinguished by thermally expanding paints based on epoxy compounds. They work well with the carbon type of combustion and are resistant to difficult climatic conditions (operating temperatures - from −60 to +60 ° C), high humidity, exposure to aggressive environments, and are durable. The widespread use of epoxy fire retardant compounds is limited by their high cost and relatively complex application technology.
The Russian market offers a huge variety of fire-retardant paints from reputable foreign manufacturers, but the share of high-quality domestic compositions is gradually increasing. These include special-purpose products: paints for metal, paints for wooden structures, for air ducts, and a line of universal compositions.

Applicability for various materials
Fire retardant impregnations are used to protect materials that can absorb liquids:
- wood;
- particle boards;
- fibreboards;
- plywood;
- bricks;
- aerated concrete;
- foam concrete.
The high absorbency is due to the rather porous structure of these materials. For this reason, it is extremely undesirable to treat the above materials with intumescent compounds, since for successful fire protection it is necessary that such a composition has very good adhesion, in other words, “stickability”.
If it is necessary to treat porous materials with intumescent fire retardants, the surfaces must first be primed with deep penetration compounds.
Intumescent fire retardants are excellent for protecting a variety of metals, concrete, and hard wood.
It is worth noting that there is another type of fire-resistant compositions - plasters, pastes, putties. They are used for sealing cable penetrations, protecting walls and ceilings. They are produced on the basis of cement with the addition of fire-resistant components, applied like ordinary plasters, in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.
Paints can also be used to protect cables. The requirements for any protective coating of the cable are reflected in GOST number 53311 of 2009. The effectiveness of compositions for wood and steel is regulated by their own GOSTs.
Yug-Technology, Rostov-on-Don
"Yug-Technology" has existed since 2007. It independently develops and produces fire retardants: their quality is confirmed by independent laboratories. The products were used at Olympic venues in Sochi, and Coca-Cola, Novolipetsk Metallurgical Plant.

How fire retardant paints work in case of fire
When heated, complex physical and chemical processes occur in fire retardant compounds. A layer 1-3 mm thick forms a porous shell up to 20-100 mm high, which seals the surface of the protected object, cutting it off from contact with fire and air oxygen.
As the temperature rises, the foam carbonizes and turns into coke with high mechanical strength and good surface adhesion. Due to low thermal conductivity, porous coke residues of fire-retardant paints reduce heat transfer hundreds of times (the thermal conductivity coefficients of foam coke, reinforced concrete and steel are 0.033-0.038, 1.7 and 52 W/m*K, respectively), prevent smoke formation and the release of decomposition products to the outside, and extend the time to start of ignition. At temperatures of 800–950 °C, such thermal insulation can operate from 30 to 180 minutes.
The more voluminous, stronger the coke layer formed and the higher its heat resistance, the slower the protected object will heat up. Thermal-expanding paint can minimize damage when extinguishing a fire in a timely manner - charred foam does not bake into surfaces and can simply be scraped off equipment and walls.

FAQ
We have selected 6 popular questions about fire protection. Write your question in the comments if it is not on this list.
1. Is preparation of the surface of the structure required before applying fire protection?
As a rule, yes. Manufacturers of fire protection products advise scrubbing off rust, getting rid of oil stains and drying the surface. And after cleaning, apply a layer of primer to ensure reliable adhesion of the fire protection to the metal surface. The most common primer is GF-021.
2. Is fire protection compatible with anti-corrosion protection?
Depends on fire protection materials. In practice, there are cases when fire retardant paints applied to the anti-corrosion coating peel off or peel off. We advise you to read the technological regulations that allow the application of fire protection against corrosion, but before doing so, we advise you to consult with your specialists.
3. Calculated the reduced metal thickness and determined the required fire resistance limit. Which protection is better to use: paint or structural fire protection?
The standards limit the use of fire retardant paints. If the PTM is less than 5.8 mm, and the required fire resistance degree of the building is I (R120) or II (R90), only structural fire protection is allowed to be used. In addition, the manufacturers themselves recommend using paints up to R45-R60 if the PTM value is small.
4. Do structures located outside need to be protected from fire?
Regardless of where the structures are located, they are part of the building. Especially if these are load-bearing structures: their destruction must not be allowed. Paragraph 5.4.2 of SP 2.13130.2012 states that load-bearing structures ensure the stability and geometric immutability of the building in the event of a fire. An exception is made for structures whose required fire resistance limit is R15: for them fire protection is optional.
5. Is it allowed to dilute fire-retardant paints with color to give the structures more aesthetics?
Depends on the manufacturer. For example, for Thermobarrier paints, you can order tinting according to RAL; paints and KROZ initially perform a decorative function, and a layer of finishing paint of any color can be applied to Krilak fire retardant compounds.
6. Which is cheaper: structural fire protection or paint?
We will calculate the costs of materials and installation work for both methods. The design is a load-bearing column in the form of an I-beam No. 45 GOST 8239-89, with a fire resistance rating of R90. As fire protection we will use OgneKhimZashchita products - Thermobarrier paint and Thermobarrier T structural fire protection. As the cost of installation work, we will take the average prices on the market.
Properties and compositions
So, let's look at the most common fire retardant impregnations.
In the vast majority of cases, their composition is similar in their recipe:
- These are aqueous solutions of mineral salts of certain acids - carbonic, boric, phosphoric, which are called fire retardants and fire inhibitors for their fire-retardant physical and chemical characteristics.
- Today, there are non-salt fire retardant impregnations, for example, Pirilax, but the manufacturer does not disclose the chemical composition of this undoubtedly effective product.
- Small percentage/mass ratio modifying additives of surfactants that increase adhesive properties; the degree and depth of penetration of the saline solution deep into the layers of wood of various species, both deciduous and coniferous, which have greater resin content, and therefore greater flammability and resistance to fire retardant treatment.
- Another required component is bright industrial dyes added to the composition of the fire retardant impregnation, so that during the work one can easily visually distinguish the treated surfaces from those still subject to impregnation.
The main properties of modern fire-retardant compounds/mixtures used for fire-retardant treatment of both wood and decorative textile materials include: high degree of adhesion, resistance to prolonged heating, cooling, and sunlight; incl. ultraviolet radiation, which allows for a long time not to re-process combustible materials and structures made from them.
